Xiahe County (夏河县), in northwestern Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, is one of the best destinations in Gansu for combining Tibetan Buddhist culture, highland grasslands, ancient settlements, prehistoric archaeology, sacred lakes and forest landscapes. With an average elevation of around 3,000 metres, the county is centred on Labrang Monastery, while Ganjia, Sangke, Darezong Lake, Amigonghong, Xiongmaogou and Tumen Pass extend the experience into the surrounding plateau. The Xiahe government currently describes the county as having seven major scenic areas and 51 attractions, as well as 25 Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.
For first-time visitors, three tourism zones matter most. Labrang Town provides the cultural core; Ganjia combines grassland, archaeology and dramatic limestone cliffs; and Sangke–Darezong–Amigonghong represents the classic alpine-grassland side of Xiahe.
A significant rating update is needed for older lists. Ganjia Secret Lands is now officially referred to by the Xiahe government as a National 4A Tourist Attraction, following its 4A assessment process in late 2025. Meanwhile, Sangke Grassland is currently listed as 3A rather than 2A, and Amigonghong, Tumen Pass and Darezong Lake are also 3A attractions in the latest complete provincial A-rated list available before the subsequent Ganjia upgrade.

Labrang Monastery
Labrang Monastery (拉卜楞寺) is the unquestioned cultural heart of Xiahe and one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1709, it is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit and a National 4A Tourist Attraction. Xiahe continues to promote Labrang as a major centre of Tibetan Buddhist learning, reflected in the destination branding “China Labrang · World Centre of Tibetan Studies.”
The monastery is far more than a single temple building. Visitors encounter large assembly halls, monastic colleges, stupas, monks’ residences and an extensive prayer-wheel corridor surrounding the complex. One of the best viewpoints is around the traditional Buddha-displaying platform on the hillside opposite the main monastery, where the entire complex can be seen against the surrounding mountains.
Visitors should remember that Labrang remains an active religious institution. Photography restrictions differ between halls, and monks and worshippers should not be photographed closely without permission.
Ganjia Secret Lands
Ganjia Secret Lands (甘加秘境景区) has developed into Xiahe’s second major tourism anchor. Located northwest of the county seat in a high plateau basin averaging around 3,300 metres, the wider Ganjia region combines Ganjia Grassland, Bajiao Ancient City, Baishiya Cliff, archaeological sites, Tibetan villages and religious heritage.
The scenic area was proposed for 4A status in December 2025 and is explicitly described as a National 4A Tourist Attraction in an official Xiahe reopening notice issued in July 2026, confirming that the upgrade has since taken effect.
This is one of the best full-day excursions from Labrang, particularly for travellers interested in combining archaeology with plateau scenery.
Baishiya Cliff and Denisovan Archaeology
The monumental Baishiya Cliff (白石崖) rises dramatically from Ganjia Grassland, with caves opening beneath the pale limestone wall.
The area became internationally important because of discoveries associated with the Xiahe Denisovan, adding prehistoric human history to an otherwise Tibetan cultural landscape. Xiahe’s current tourism material specifically highlights the Baishiya cave area as the location connected with Denisovan remains dating back roughly 200,000 years.
Visitors should distinguish the official visitor area from the deeper cave system. In 2026, Xiahe explicitly prohibited tourists from entering non-tourist sections of Baishiya Cave and other undeveloped cliff and cave areas because of rockfall, weather, communication and rescue risks.
Bajiao Ancient City
Bajiao Ancient City (八角古城) lies beneath the mountains of Ganjia. Despite its name, the city is characterized by a distinctive cross-shaped defensive design with projecting bastions that give the outer walls an unusual geometric appearance.
Official Xiahe heritage information records a surviving wall perimeter of approximately 2,193 metres and identifies the settlement as an important fortified historical site.
The combination of the ancient walls, surrounding Tibetan villages, open grassland and the white limestone cliffs makes Bajiao one of the most photogenic cultural landscapes in Gannan.
Sangke Grassland
Sangke Grassland (桑科草原) lies only about 13 kilometres from Labrang and is the easiest major grassland experience from Xiahe town.
The scenic grassland covers roughly 70 square kilometres and lies above 3,000 metres. The Daxia River meanders through the meadow, while summer brings wildflowers, grazing yaks and sheep, traditional tents and wide plateau skies.
An important correction to older tourism material is that Sangke should now be listed as a National 3A Tourist Attraction, not 2A. It is also being developed as the wider Sangke Provincial Tourism Resort, giving the area a broader role in Xiahe’s accommodation, camping and outdoor-tourism system.
June through August offers the greenest landscapes, while September brings clearer skies and stronger autumn colours.
Darezong Lake
Darezong Lake (达尔宗湖) is a National 3A Tourist Attraction in the mountain and forest zone around Wanggeertang. It is one of Xiahe’s most atmospheric sacred natural sites, with a small alpine lake surrounded by forested slopes and Tibetan religious symbolism.
The lake is much smaller and more intimate than large plateau lakes such as Qinghai Lake, making the experience primarily about silence, forest scenery and local sacred traditions.
Road and walking conditions can become slippery after rain. Visitors should remain on approved routes rather than walking into the surrounding mountains; the county’s 2026 outdoor-safety notice specifically identified undeveloped areas around Darezong Lake as restricted.
Amigonghong Scenic Area
Amigonghong Scenic Area (阿米贡洪景区) is located around Amuquhu Town (阿木去乎镇) in southern Xiahe. The surrounding landscape combines alpine grassland, agricultural fields and seasonal flower scenery at an average local elevation above 3,100 metres.
Amigonghong is currently listed as a National 3A Tourist Attraction. It is especially attractive during summer when highland rapeseed and other flowers colour the plateau, and its boutique tented accommodation has made it popular for photography and slower highland stays.
Xiongmaogou Scenic Area
Xiongmaogou (熊猫沟景区), commonly translated as Panda Valley, lies in the greener mountain environment around Damai Township. The area is characterized by forest, streams and highland valleys and provides a striking contrast with the open grasslands of Sangke and Ganjia. Xiahe continues to identify it as one of the county’s important established scenic areas.
Some older tourism lists describe Xiongmaogou as a 3A attraction, but it does not appear as a separate A-rated attraction in Gansu’s June 2024 provincial list. It is therefore safer in current international tourism content to call it an established scenic area without attaching an unverified current A-rating.
Tumen Pass and Taiyanggou
Tumen Pass Scenic Area (土门关景区) is a National 3A Tourist Attraction in Qu’ao Township. Historically, the area marked an important transition between the Loess Plateau and the Tibetan Plateau; geographically, Xiahe itself uses Tumen Pass as a dividing point between the lower northern terrain and the more obvious plateau landscapes farther south.
A useful clarification concerns Taiyanggou (太阳沟). The current provincial A-rated list gives the address of Tumen Pass Scenic Area as Taiyanggou Natural Village, Xianggao Administrative Village. This means tourism materials should avoid automatically treating “Taiyanggou 2A Scenic Area” and “Tumen Pass 3A Scenic Area” as two independently verified current A-rated attractions.
Taiyanggou itself remains worth including for forests, rural landscapes and seasonal blossom photography.
