  • Gansu Climate

Gansu (甘肃省) stretches across a long north–south axis in Northwest China, creating highly diverse climate zones influenced by altitude, latitude, and terrain. The province includes subtropical humid climate in the south, temperate monsoon climate in the southeast, semi-arid continental climate in central areas, and high-altitude alpine climate in the north and west, resulting in significant regional differences. Overall climate features: dry and low rainfall, strong sunshine with very high UV intensity, large day–night temperature differences, and frequent wind and sand in western regions. A well-known local saying captures this vividly: “wear fur in the morning, gauze in the afternoon, and sit around the stove eating watermelon”, reflecting the province’s dramatic daily temperature swings and strong sunlight conditions.

    Regional Climate Differences in Gansu

    Southern Gansu – Longnan (陇南)

Longnan (陇南) is the province’s mildest region, featuring a subtropical humid climate with warm year-round temperatures, plentiful rainfall, and generally no severe winter cold. Summer is warm and rainy, supporting lush vegetation and fertile landscapes, making it ideal for visiting rivers, valleys, and cultural sites.

Southeast Gansu – Tianshui, Pingliang, Qingyang (天水 / 平凉 / 庆阳)

This area experiences a temperate semi-humid climate with four distinct seasons: wet and warm summers, dry and cold winters. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for sightseeing and outdoor activities, while the summer monsoon supports green mountains and agricultural landscapes. Winter is cold and dry, requiring appropriate clothing for outdoor excursions.

Central Gansu – Lanzhou, Dingxi (兰州 / 定西)

Lanzhou (兰州) and Dingxi (定西) fall within a semi-arid temperate climate, characterized by strong wind, dry air, and notable day–night temperature variation. Rainfall is low, often concentrated in summer months. This climate is ideal for desert and canyon exploration, with clear skies for photography during most of the year.

Hexi Corridor – Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang (武威 / 张掖 / 嘉峪关 / 敦煌)

The Hexi Corridor exhibits a temperate continental desert climate with extremely dry conditions, intense sunshine, occasional sandstorms, and minimal rainfall. Temperature swings are large between day and night. This region’s dramatic landscapes, including deserts, dunes, and Danxia formations, are most striking in autumn.

Gannan & Linxia Plateau (甘南 / 临夏)

The Gannan (甘南) and Linxia (临夏) Plateau has a high-altitude alpine climate, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The area’s climate is characterized by strong UV radiation, crisp air, and rapid weather changes. Summer is suitable for grassland and plateau exploration, while winter is ideal for snow-capped mountain scenery.
