Zhangzhou (漳州市) occupies a large area of southern Fujian, extending from the historic urban centre and the lower Jiulong River to mountain tulou villages, inland forest areas and the coastline around Dongshan Island. Although the city is easy to reach by high-speed train and expressway, its major attractions are widely separated. Zhangzhou Ancient City (漳州古城), Nanjing Tulou (南靖土楼) and Dongshan Island (东山岛) belong to three different travel zones and should not be treated as neighbouring attractions.

The most important part of Zhangzhou transport planning is choosing the correct railway gateway. Zhangzhou Railway Station (漳州站) serves the central city, Nanjing Railway Station (南靖站) is the most useful rail gateway for the tulou region, Yunxiao Railway Station (云霄站) provides access to Dongshan Island, while Zhangpu Railway Station (漳浦站) and Zhao’an Railway Station (诏安站) serve the southern coastal counties. Public transport is practical within the urban area and on selected tourism routes, but private transfers, self-driving or licensed tour vehicles remain more efficient for combining mountain villages and coastal destinations.

How to Get to Zhangzhou

By Air via Xiamen

Zhangzhou currently has no major commercial passenger airport. The nearest and most convenient aviation gateway is Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (厦门高崎国际机场), which handles extensive domestic and international services.

After landing, travellers staying in central Zhangzhou can use an airport coach, licensed private transfer or taxi. Another practical arrangement is to travel from the airport to Xiamen North Railway Station (厦门北站) and continue by high-speed train to Zhangzhou. Passengers travelling directly to Nanjing Tulou, Zhangpu or Dongshan Island may find a prearranged road transfer from Xiamen more efficient than entering central Zhangzhou first.

Airport and intercity coach schedules can change according to season and passenger demand. Travellers arriving late in the evening should confirm the final service in advance rather than relying on an airport bus after landing.

By High-Speed Train

Rail is the most convenient way to reach Zhangzhou from Xiamen, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Shenzhen, Chaoshan, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai. However, the station should be selected according to the final destination.

Zhangzhou Railway Station is the principal gateway for Xiangcheng District, Longwen District and Zhangzhou Ancient City. It lies outside the historic centre, and the final transfer usually requires a bus, taxi or ride-hailing vehicle. Depending on traffic, the journey to the ancient-city area generally takes around 30–50 minutes.

Nanjing Railway Station serves Nanjing County but is not located near Tianluokeng or Yunshuiyao. Travellers must continue through the county road network into the mountain area, where winding roads and village traffic make journey times longer than the map distance suggests.

Yunxiao Railway Station remains the main operating railway gateway for Dongshan Island. It is located on the mainland rather than on the island, so a further road transfer is required to reach Tongling Town (铜陵镇), Nanmen Bay (南门湾), Maluan Bay (马銮湾) or Jinluan Bay (金銮湾).

Zhangpu Railway Station is the most useful station for central Zhangpu, Zhaojiabao and parts of the volcanic coastline, while Zhao’an Railway Station serves Zhao’an County and the southern Fujian border region. Train frequencies at these smaller stations may be lower than at Zhangzhou Station, so connections should be checked before arranging a same-day scenic-area transfer.

By Road

Zhangzhou is connected with Xiamen, Quanzhou, Longyan, Chaozhou and Shantou through an extensive expressway and highway network. Important corridors include the Shenyang–Haikou Expressway, Xiamen–Chengdu Expressway, Zhangzhou–Wuping Expressway and the coastal G228 Highway.

Road travel is especially useful for visitors combining several rural destinations, such as Zhangzhou Ancient City, Daimei Ancient Village, Nanjing Tulou and the coastal counties. Driving time should not be calculated from distance alone because mountain roads, holiday congestion, village traffic and scenic-area controls can significantly slow the journey.

Transportation Within Central Zhangzhou

The urban bus network covers Xiangcheng District (芗城区), Longwen District (龙文区) and parts of Longhai and the surrounding development areas. Buses are inexpensive and suitable for travellers with flexible schedules, although frequent stops and urban traffic make them slower than taxis.

Taxis and licensed ride-hailing vehicles are the most convenient option between Zhangzhou Railway Station, the ancient city, hotels and Yundongyan. At the railway station, use the official taxi queue or a recognized ride-hailing platform rather than accepting unsolicited offers from drivers.

Zhangzhou Ancient City is best explored on foot. The main historic streets are compact, while several lanes restrict motor vehicles and may introduce temporary traffic controls during festivals and busy evenings. Shared bicycles are useful around Zhongshan Park and the outer streets of the ancient city, but riders should dismount in crowded pedestrian areas and park only in designated spaces.

A station-to-ancient-city tourism connection such as the L1 route may operate on weekends, public holidays or selected travel periods. Because these services can be adjusted, travellers should check the latest schedule through the official Zhangzhou public-transport platform.

Tourism Buses and County Connections

Zhangzhou has introduced tourism bus routes connecting Zhangzhou Ancient City with selected destinations outside the central area. These services provide a lower-cost alternative to private transfers, but their operating days, frequency and trial periods may change.

The L5 service can reduce the cost of reaching Nanjing Tulou, but it is not always suitable for travellers who want to visit both Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao in one day. The two tourism areas use different mountain routes, and a private car or organized tour provides more control over stops and return times.

County and rural buses reach many towns and villages, but services may finish earlier than urban routes. Travellers should confirm the final return departure before visiting a remote tulou village, mountain temple or coastal settlement.

Transport to Major Attractions

Zhangzhou Ancient City

From Zhangzhou Railway Station, use a bus, taxi or ride-hailing vehicle to reach the ancient-city perimeter. The final part of the journey should be completed on foot because the core around Taiwan Road, Hong Kong Road and the historic lanes has limited vehicle access. Self-driving visitors should use public parking outside the pedestrian area rather than attempting to enter the narrow old streets.

Yundongyan

Yundongyan (云洞岩) lies in Longwen District, east of central Zhangzhou. A taxi or private vehicle is the most efficient choice, although city buses reach parts of the surrounding area. Stone paths and steps can become slippery after rain, so visitors should allow enough daylight for the return journey.

Nanjing Tulou

For Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, Yuchang Lou and Taxia Village, travel through Nanjing County by tourism bus, private transfer or organized vehicle. Visitors arriving at Nanjing Railway Station still need a substantial mountain-road transfer.

The lower-cost L5 tourism route can be useful for independent travellers departing from central Zhangzhou, but a private vehicle is more practical when combining several villages or carrying large luggage.

Yunshuiyao

Yunshuiyao can be reached from Nanjing Railway Station through county buses and road transfers. Public services may require waiting or changing vehicles, so a private transfer is recommended for families, international visitors and travellers combining Hegui Lou (和贵楼) with Huaiyuan Lou (怀远楼).

Hua’an Tulou

The main Hua’an tulou areas are reached primarily by road. From central Zhangzhou, use an intercity coach followed by a local transfer, or arrange a private vehicle. Public transport is less visitor-friendly than the routes serving Nanjing Tulou.

Daimei Ancient Village and Moon Port

Daimei Ancient Village (埭美古村) and Moon Port (月港) can be reached through the L6 tourism route, taxi or private car. They can be combined on the same road-based day tour, but they are not within walking distance of one another.

Changtai and Shili Lanshan

The L7 tourism route provides a public option for Shili Lanshan (十里蓝山) and parts of Changtai, while private transport is more convenient for combining Shili Lanshan with Shanzhong Village (山重村) and other rural attractions. Mountain roads contain bends, slopes and occasional fog, so drivers should avoid stopping on blind corners for photographs.

Pinghe County

Sanping Temple (三平寺) and Lingtong Mountain (灵通山) are best reached by private vehicle or organized transport. Public travel usually requires a transfer in Pinghe County, followed by a taxi or local vehicle. Access can be affected by heavy rain, landslides and temporary mountain-road controls.

Zhangpu and the Volcanic Coast

From Zhangpu Railway Station, continue by taxi or private vehicle. Heritage villages, coastal formations and volcanic landscapes are scattered across the county, and ordinary public buses may not connect them in an efficient sightseeing sequence.

Dongshan Island

From Yunxiao Railway Station, continue by county bus, taxi, ride-hailing vehicle or hotel transfer. On the island, Tongling and Nanmen Bay are suitable for walking, while taxis or private vehicles are more convenient for travelling between Nanmen Bay, Maluan Bay, Sufeng Mountain and Jinluan Bay.

Electric scooters are popular on Dongshan Island, but coastal wind, strong sun, rain and holiday traffic can make long-distance riding difficult. Travellers should not rely on a scooter when carrying luggage, travelling with children or visiting during unstable weather.

Zhao’an and Jiuhou Mountain

From Zhao’an Railway Station, continue by county bus, taxi or private car. Jiuhou Mountain (九侯山) and rural villages are dispersed, and return services may end earlier than expected, making private transport preferable for a full-day visit.

Self-Driving in Zhangzhou

Self-driving is the most flexible option for travellers visiting several counties. It is particularly useful for the tulou mountains, Changtai countryside, Pinghe, the Zhangpu coast and Dongshan Island. The G228 coastal corridor is also an important tourism road linking coastal areas of Longhai, Zhangpu, Yunxiao, Dongshan and Zhao’an.

The tulou region and Dongshan Island should not be planned as casual same-day sightseeing destinations. The road transfer is long, and each area requires at least one separate day.

International travellers cannot drive in mainland China using a foreign driving licence or an international driving permit alone. A valid Chinese driving licence or officially issued temporary driving permit is required. The same principle applies to legally registered motorcycles.

Bicycle, Electric-Bicycle and Motorcycle Travel

Bicycles are suitable for the outer streets of Zhangzhou Ancient City, Zhongshan Park and selected urban neighbourhoods. Riders should dismount in crowded historic lanes and avoid blocking entrances, emergency passages and shopfronts.

On Dongshan Island, the Sufeng Mountain coastal road (苏峰山环岛路) is one of the region’s most scenic cycling routes. Its combination of mountains, sea views and exposed coastal sections makes it attractive for experienced riders, but parts of the road are shared with cars, buses and motorcycles. Early morning is preferable because temperatures are lower and traffic is lighter.

Experienced cyclists can also explore sections of the G228 coastal highway, but it is not a continuous protected cycleway. Riders may encounter trucks, bridges, crosswinds and urban traffic, making helmets, reflective clothing, lights, water and repair equipment essential.

Changtai, Nanjing and Pinghe offer attractive mountain roads for cycling and motorcycling, but long descents, wet leaves, blind bends and tourist coaches increase the risk. These roads are not suitable for inexperienced riders.

Motorcycles and high-powered electric vehicles must be legally registered and insured, and the rider must hold the correct mainland Chinese licence or temporary permit. Electric bicycles are regulated differently from electric motorcycles, so travellers should confirm the legal classification of a rental vehicle rather than assuming all electric two-wheelers can be used without documentation.

On Dongshan Island, riders should wear helmets, avoid carrying large luggage, reduce speed on coastal curves, return before dark and never ride onto beaches, tidal flats or exposed sandbars.

Practical Transport Combinations

Transport Safety and Practical Advice

Tourism bus routes such as L5, L6 and L7 may operate on trial or seasonal schedules, so their departure times should be reconfirmed before travel. Mountain and county buses may also stop earlier than urban services, making it important to check the final return departure before entering remote villages.

During the summer and early autumn typhoon season, coastal roads, bridges, beaches, mountain routes and scenic shuttles may be restricted. Travellers should follow official weather and transport notices and avoid continuing into closed areas.

At railway stations and scenic-area entrances, use licensed taxis, recognized ride-hailing applications, registered tour vehicles or official bus stations. Unusually cheap road transfers, unlicensed cars and informal boat tours may involve unclear pricing or additional charges.

Proposed infrastructure such as the Quanzhou–Xiamen–Zhangzhou Intercity Railway R1 Line should not be treated as an operating transport option until officially opened. Current visitors should continue using the existing railway stations, buses and road connections.
