Nanping Transportation

Nanping (南平市) is one of Fujian Province’s largest and most geographically dispersed destinations. Its tourism resources extend across Yanping District, Jianyang District, Wuyishan City, Jian’ou City, Shaowu City, Shunchang County, Pucheng County, Guangze County, Songxi County and Zhenghe County. Railway stations, historic towns, mountain areas and rural attractions may be separated by one to three hours of driving, so transport should be planned according to the specific county rather than simply choosing a ticket marked “Nanping.”

Nanping’s transport network expanded substantially during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Its expressway mileage exceeded 1,000 kilometres, ranking first among Fujian’s prefecture-level cities, while 88.7% of its towns gained access to an expressway within approximately 30 minutes. The opening of the Shaxian–Nanping Expressway (沙南高速) in December 2025 further improved access between northern Fujian, Sanming and the coastal regions.

Understanding Nanping’s Main Transport Hubs

The most important planning point is that Nanping City Station (南平市站) is not located in the traditional urban centre of Yanping. It stands in Jianyang District, beside the Wuyi New Area and close to the transport corridor leading toward Wuyishan. The station was formerly called Wuyishan East Station, and it is now Nanping’s principal high-speed rail gateway for Jianyang, Wuyishan and the wider “Greater Wuyi” tourism region.

Travellers heading to the older Nanping urban area beside the Min River should normally use Yanping Station (延平站) or Yanping West Station (延平西站). Those visiting Wuyi Mountain may find Wuyishan North Railway Station (武夷山北站) more convenient, while Jian’ou West Railway Station (建瓯西站) is the main high-speed rail gateway for Jian’ou.

How to Get to Nanping

By High-Speed Train

High-speed rail is the best choice for most visitors travelling from Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanchang, Hefei or other cities along the regional rail network. However, the correct station depends entirely on the planned destination.

Nanping City Railway Station

Nanping City Railway Station is located in Jianyang and serves as the main transport hub for the northern tourism corridor. It is connected with the Wuyi New Area coach terminal, local buses and the Wuyi tourist tram.

This station is recommended for:

• Jianyang District
• Wuyi New Area
• Kaoting Academy and Zhu Xi cultural areas
• Jian Kiln and Jianzhan cultural sites
• Wuyishan Scenic Area, when a convenient train to Wuyishan North is unavailable
• Transfers toward Pucheng, Shaowu, Guangze and other northern counties

Do not book Nanping City Station when the hotel is in Yanping unless the available train is significantly more convenient. The two urban areas are separated by a substantial road journey.

Wuyishan North Railway Station

Wuyishan North Railway Station is generally the most convenient railway station for travellers staying in downtown Wuyishan, Sangu National Tourist Resort or accommodation near the main scenic area.

Wuyishan’s public buses have operated fare-free since September 27, 2023. The system includes 13 routes connecting the railway station, airport, urban area, tourist resort and several attractions. The free policy had operated for 1,000 days by mid-2026 and continued to serve both residents and visitors.

Yanping Railway Stations

Yanping Station is the principal high-speed rail gateway for the historic Nanping urban area in Yanping District. Yanping West Station provides additional railway access, particularly for routes involving Sanming and inland Fujian.

Travellers should check both stations when booking because a hotel marked “Nanping downtown” may be closer to Yanping Station than to Nanping City Station. Taxi and city-bus transfers are available from both, but suburban attractions and mountain villages are more efficiently reached by hired car.

Jian’ou West and Jian’ou East

Jian’ou West Railway Station serves high-speed services on the north–south corridor and is the most convenient choice for Jian’ou’s central urban area. Jian’ou East Railway Station lies on the Quzhou–Ningde Railway and is useful for regional journeys involving Songxi, Zhenghe, eastern Fujian and southwestern Zhejiang.

The Quzhou–Ningde Railway connects Songxi, Zhenghe and Jian’ou East with cities in Zhejiang and Ningde, forming an important mountain railway corridor through northeastern Fujian.

Shaowu, Guangze and Shunchang

Shaowu, Guangze and Shunchang retain conventional passenger railway services. These stations are useful when the timetable fits the itinerary, but services may be less frequent and slower than those at the main high-speed rail stations.

For a short tourism itinerary, it can sometimes be faster to take high-speed rail to Nanping City, Yanping or another major station and continue by road. Always compare the complete journey rather than looking only at the train duration.

Pucheng

Pucheng does not have the same direct high-speed rail access as Jianyang or Wuyishan. Road-based high-speed rail shuttle services connect the county with major external stations, including Jiangshan Railway Station in Zhejiang. Pucheng also operates connections toward Nanping City Station, with extra capacity added during busy travel periods.

For visitors combining Pucheng with northern Zhejiang, Jiangshan may be the most logical rail gateway. For a wider Nanping itinerary, a coach or private vehicle from Nanping City Station may be more convenient.

Arriving by Air

Wuyishan Airport (武夷山机场, WUS) is Nanping’s only civil passenger airport. It is positioned between downtown Wuyishan and the main tourism zone, making it convenient for Wuyi Mountain when a suitable direct flight is available.

As of July 2026, the airport operated routes to cities including Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Qingdao and Chongqing. The Chongqing route began operating three times weekly in July 2026. Flight routes and frequencies change seasonally, so passengers should verify the actual schedule before building an itinerary around the airport.

Public buses connect the airport with downtown Wuyishan, Sangu and the railway-station corridor. Some older airport information still shows a RMB 2 fare, but the regular Wuyishan public-bus network is currently fare-free. Taxis and ride-hailing vehicles remain more convenient for travellers carrying large luggage.

Travellers whose destination is Yanping, Jian’ou or southern Nanping may find it easier to fly to Fuzhou Changle International Airport or Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport and continue by high-speed rail.

Arriving by Road

Nanping’s mountainous geography makes expressways essential for travel between its districts and counties. By late 2025, the city had more than 1,000 kilometres of operating expressway, together with over 16,000 kilometres of ordinary roads.

The G7013 Shaxian–Nanping Expressway opened fully in December 2025. The route links Sanming’s Shaxian District with Jianyang and connects with several major expressway corridors. It shortened the journey between Shaxian and Nanping to approximately 1.5 hours and reduced travel time between Sanming and the Wuyi New Area by around 40 minutes.

Long-distance buses remain useful for county-to-county travel and destinations not served by high-speed rail. However, timetables in smaller counties may change according to weekday, season and passenger demand. The latest departure should be confirmed at the local coach station or through an official booking platform.

Public Transportation in Nanping

Wuyi Tourist Tram

The Wuyi New Area Tourist Tram (武夷新区旅游观光有轨电车) connects Nanping City Railway Station with the Wuyishan tourism corridor. The operating section is approximately 26.2 kilometres long and takes about 40 minutes from end to end. The published standard fare is between RMB 5 and RMB 10, although holiday promotions or temporary free-travel policies may apply.

The tram is not a citywide metro system. It is a single tourism-oriented line designed primarily for passengers travelling between Nanping City Station, the Wuyi New Area and the southern Wuyishan tourism area.

K1 Express Bus

The K1 bus provides a road-based connection between Nanping City Station, Jianyang, the Wuyishan scenic southern entrance and Sangu National Tourist Resort. It is commonly listed at RMB 10 per journey and can be more useful than the tram when its stops or departure time better match the hotel location.

Traffic conditions affect K1 more than the tram, so allow extra time before a reserved bamboo-raft departure or high-speed train.

Wuyishan Free Buses

Wuyishan’s fare-free bus network is the most visitor-friendly part of Nanping’s public transport system. Routes connect:

• Wuyishan Airport
• Downtown Wuyishan
• Sangu National Tourist Resort
• The northern and southern scenic corridors
• Xiamei and Chengcun areas
• Selected rural communities

Passengers can normally board without scanning or paying. Rural and tourism routes may nevertheless operate at long intervals, so free transport should not be confused with high-frequency urban service.

Other parts of Nanping operate their own local bus systems, but they do not share Wuyishan’s universal free-bus policy.

Transportation to Major Tourism Areas

Transportation Inside Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area

The main Wuyi Mountain scenic zone covers a large protected area, and its internal roads are primarily served by official environmental sightseeing buses. Private cars, motorcycles and ordinary city buses cannot be used to travel between the major internal attractions.

The passes allow multiple rides during their validity period. Purchase is officially voluntary, but the buses are highly practical because Tianyou Peak, Yixiantian, Huxiaoyan, Dahongpao, Water Curtain Cave, Wuyi Palace and the bamboo-raft departure area are separated by considerable distances.

The southern entrance is the principal gateway for Tianyou Peak and the southern attractions. The northern entrance is more convenient for Dahongpao and Water Curtain Cave. The Xingcun Nine-Bend Stream Wharf is the departure point for bamboo rafting, while the journey finishes near Wuyi Palace.

Wuyishan National Park No. 1 Scenic Road

The Wuyishan National Park No. 1 Scenic Road (武夷山国家公园1号风景道) is the leading self-driving route in Nanping. The 251-kilometre tourism road passes through 11 towns and 40 villages in Wuyishan and Jianyang, linking tea gardens, waterfalls, cultural sites, traditional villages and scenic viewpoints.

Representative stops include Yanzike Ecological Tea Garden, Qinglong Waterfall, Zhu Xi cultural areas, Kaoting Academy, Jianzhan cultural facilities, Baiyun Temple and several rural viewing platforms. The road should be explored selectively rather than driven from beginning to end without stopping.

A tourism bus service numbered 251 has operated between the Wuyishan Scenic Area Southern Entrance and Moon Bay, passing Nanyuanling, Sancai Peak, Yanzike, Baiyun Temple and other locations. The original timetable provided only one round trip each day, so current operation must be confirmed before relying on it.

Self-Driving in Nanping

Self-driving is the most efficient option for travellers visiting several counties, rural tea areas, waterfalls, historic villages or mountain roads. It is particularly valuable for:

• Villages surrounding Jian’ou, Songxi and Zhenghe
• Pucheng rural tourism
• Historic towns away from railway stations
• Multi-day routes combining Wuyishan with northern Nanping

Mountain roads may be narrow, steep and affected by fog, heavy rain or fallen rocks. Avoid building an itinerary around urban driving times; a short map distance may require considerably longer on county roads.

During Chinese public holidays, temporary traffic controls and peripheral parking systems may be introduced around Wuyi Mountain, Sangu and popular ancient towns. Park only in designated areas and transfer to official scenic transport where required.

Foreign visitors cannot legally drive using only an overseas licence or an International Driving Permit. A Chinese driving licence or temporary Chinese driving permit is required.

Cycling in Nanping

Chongyang Stream Leisure Trail

The Chongyang Stream Leisure Trail (崇阳溪漫游道) is Nanping’s most accessible long-distance cycling facility. It runs for approximately 66 kilometres from Chong’an Bridge in Wuyishan to Nanlin Bridge in the Wuyi New Area, connecting the national park region, Sangu, rural landscapes and the Chengcun archaeological area.

The trail includes six service stations, seven parking areas and 34 external public-transport connection points. It was designed to provide access to sightseeing vehicles and shared bicycles, with external connections through Jianyang Route 8, K1 and Wuyishan Route 10.

Ordinary cars, motorcycles and private electric scooters are not permitted inside the managed leisure trail. Cyclists should use the designated facilities and obey any temporary closures.

Completing all 66 kilometres is unnecessary for most visitors. A shorter ride around Sangu, Xingcun, Chengcun or the Wuyi New Area provides a more relaxed experience and makes it easier to return by bus or taxi.

Scenic-Road Cycling

The No. 1 Scenic Road also supports cycling, but it is more demanding than the riverside trail. Riders share mountain roads with cars and tour vehicles, and some sections include long climbs, sharp bends and limited mobile coverage.

Carry a repair kit, water, lights and rain protection. Avoid remote mountain sections after dark or during heavy rain and fog.

Motorcycle Travel

Motorcycle touring can be rewarding on Nanping’s rural roads, especially around Shaowu, Guangze and the outer parts of the national-park scenic-road network. However, motorcycles are not permitted inside Wuyi Mountain’s controlled internal sightseeing roads or on the Chongyang Stream managed leisure trail.

Riders need a licence valid in China for the appropriate motorcycle category, together with a legally registered and insured motorcycle. Overseas licence holders must obtain a Chinese temporary driving permit before riding.

Local restrictions, tunnel controls and road-access rules should be checked before departure. Mountain riding after rain is particularly hazardous because of wet leaves, gravel, fog and limited visibility around bends.

Practical Nanping Transportation Tips

Book railway tickets using the complete station name. Nanping City Station, Yanping Station, Yanping West, Wuyishan North, Wuyishan Station and the Wuyi tourist tram terminal are different places.

Stay in Sangu when Wuyi Mountain is the primary destination. Stay in Jianyang or the Wuyi New Area for Kaoting, Jianzhan culture and convenient access to Nanping City Station. Use Yanping for the traditional riverside city and southern transport connections.

Do not attempt to visit Wuyishan, Shaowu, Jian’ou and Pucheng as short stops on the same day. Nanping is better organised as several geographical clusters:

Wuyishan–Jianyang, Yanping–Shunchang, Shaowu–Guangze, Jian’ou–Songxi–Zhenghe, and Pucheng.

Check train times, rural buses, scenic transport and road conditions one day before travel. In mountainous Nanping, heavy rain, landslides, fog and temporary national-park controls can affect both road and attraction access.
