Fuzhou (福州), the capital of Fujian Province, is a city best appreciated at a relaxed pace. Its tourism landscape combines historic alleyways, former foreign-consulate quarters, maritime and naval heritage, Buddhist mountains, classical gardens, hot springs, wetlands, forest parks, coastal villages and offshore islands.
The central districts are particularly suitable for cultural walking tours. Sanfang Qixiang (三坊七巷), West Lake Park, Shangxiahang, Yantai Hill and the historic hills of the old city can be connected by metro, taxi and walking. Beyond the urban center, Mawei focuses on modern Chinese maritime history, Yongtai on waterfalls and mountain resorts, Fuqing on religious and rural landscapes, and Pingtan on beaches, sea-eroded landforms, stone villages and island roads.
As of January 8, 2026, the official Fuzhou tourism directory contained 67 nationally rated A-level attractions, including one 5A attraction, 15 rated 4A, 39 rated 3A and 12 rated 2A. The list does not include Pingtan’s attractions because Pingtan County and the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone operate under a province-administered integrated management system.
🏛️ Fuzhou Tourism Overview
Historic Fuzhou and Mindu Culture
The cultural center of Fuzhou is Sanfang Qixiang Historical and Cultural Block, a preserved neighborhood based on the traditional “three lanes and seven alleys” layout. Its fishbone-shaped street network developed from the urban residential system of the Jin and Tang periods, while many surviving residences date from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The district contains former residences, gardens, ancestral halls, museums, traditional workshops and sites associated with important figures in modern Chinese history. Sanfang Qixiang is also included on China’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, although it has not yet been inscribed as a World Heritage property.
Nearby West Lake Park, Wushan Hill, Yushan Hill, Zhuzi Lane and Lin Zexu Memorial Hall reveal other layers of Fuzhou’s history, from classical landscaping and Buddhist architecture to late Qing reform and maritime defense.
Maritime Heritage and Historic Port Culture
Fuzhou was one of modern China’s earliest treaty ports and an important gateway for maritime trade. In Mawei District, the China Shipbuilding Culture Scenic Area presents the history of the Fujian Arsenal, naval education, shipbuilding, maritime defense and China’s early aviation industry.
Across the river in Cangshan District, Yantai Hill preserves former consulates, churches, schools, hospitals, residences and commercial buildings created during Fuzhou’s period as an international port. Together, Mawei and Yantai Hill offer two contrasting perspectives on the city’s modern maritime transformation.
Mountains, Forests and Hot Springs
Fuzhou is surrounded by low mountains and forested hills. Gushan Mountain is the city’s most famous mountain destination, combining Yongquan Temple, cliff inscriptions, forest paths and elevated views. It remained a national 4A attraction in the official January 2026 directory, while the city was working to improve its services as part of a future 5A application.
The urban area also contains Fuzhou National Forest Park, Fudao Forest Walkway, Jinji Mountain Park and Fushan Country Park. Mountain resorts around Guling, Guihu and Gui’an add summer retreats and hot-spring experiences to the wider metropolitan area.
Islands, Wetlands and Coastal Landscapes
The coastline east of Fuzhou includes estuary wetlands, fishing villages, rocky peninsulas and offshore islands. Minjiang Estuary National Wetland Park is one of the region’s most important bird habitats, while Lianjiang, Changle, Fuqing and Pingtan provide coastal scenery and fishing-community culture.
Pingtan’s leading experiences include the Northern Ecological Corridor, Changjiang’ao, Beigang Village, Houyan Island, Tannan Bay, Xianrenjing and island roads overlooking the Taiwan Strait. Its bioluminescent “blue tears” phenomenon can occur during warmer months, but sightings depend on marine organisms, wind, tides and water conditions and are never guaranteed.
