  • Huangshan Attractions

Huangshan City (黄山市) is one of China’s most complete destinations for combining spectacular mountain scenery with traditional culture. Its tourism identity rests on three major pillars: Mount Huangshan, the ancient villages and architecture of Huizhou culture, and the rivers, lakes, tea gardens and forested valleys of southern Anhui.

The city contains two internationally recognized heritage highlights. Mount Huangshan (黄山风景区) is a UNESCO mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site celebrated for granite peaks, ancient pines, clouds, hot springs and its influence on Chinese landscape art. Xidi (西递) and Hongcun (宏村) were jointly inscribed as a UNESCO cultural World Heritage Site in 2000 for their exceptionally preserved village layouts, waterways, residences and Huizhou architectural traditions.

Tourism resources are distributed across Tunxi District, Huangshan District, Huizhou District, Shexian County, Yixian County, Xiuning County and Qimen County. Mount Huangshan and Hongcun are the most internationally famous destinations, while places such as Huizhou Ancient City, Chengkan, Mount Qiyun, Xixinan, Taiping Lake and Yangchan Tulou reveal the region’s wider cultural and natural diversity.

    Top Tourist Attractions in Huangshan

The following ranking is an editorial guide for first-time travellers, based on cultural significance, scenery, reputation and the overall visitor experience. It is not an official government ranking.

Mount Huangshan and the Northern Scenic Area

    Mount Huangshan Scenic Area

Mount Huangshan is the defining attraction of the region and one of China’s most celebrated mountain landscapes. Its scenery is formed by steep granite peaks, naturally shaped rocks, old pine trees, deep valleys, clouds, waterfalls and hot springs. UNESCO notes that the mountain has inspired poets, painters and landscape artists since the Tang Dynasty and strongly influenced the development of Chinese shanshui painting.

The principal sightseeing areas include Bright Summit Peak (光明顶), Beginning-to-Believe Peak (始信峰), Lion Peak (狮子峰), Flying-over Rock (飞来石), West Sea Grand Canyon (西海大峡谷) and viewpoints around Lotus Peak (莲花峰) and Celestial Capital Peak (天都峰). Access to individual peaks and canyon sections may rotate or close temporarily for ecological protection, weather or maintenance.

One full day is sufficient for a cable-car-assisted overview, but two days with a night on the mountain provide more time for sunrise, sunset and quieter trails.

    Taiping Lake Scenic Area

Taiping Lake lies north of Mount Huangshan and forms an important part of the regional “Mount Huangshan–Taiping Lake–Jiuhua Mountain” tourism corridor. The emerald-coloured reservoir is surrounded by forested mountains and scattered islands. Boat trips normally explore the central lake and selected island attractions, although sailing routes vary by season and operating arrangements.

    Emerald Valley

Emerald Valley (翡翠谷), also known as Lovers’ Valley, is located near Tangkou at the southern foot of Mount Huangshan. It is known for a series of clear pools whose water appears turquoise, green or blue under different light conditions. The valley is a recognized 4A attraction and is often combined with a Mount Huangshan trip.

    Nine-Dragon Waterfall and Furong Valley

Nine-Dragon Waterfall (九龙瀑) is one of the largest waterfall systems below Mount Huangshan, with water descending through a sequence of cliffs and pools. Furong Valley (芙蓉谷) offers forest paths, streams, pools and quieter mountain scenery. Both are suitable as half-day additions before or after ascending Mount Huangshan.

UNESCO Villages and the Countryside of Yixian County

    Hongcun Ancient Village

Hongcun is famous for its carefully designed water system, often interpreted as the shape of an ox. Water flows through narrow channels between traditional houses before reaching the crescent-shaped Moon Pond (月沼) and the broad South Lake (南湖).

The village preserves ancestral halls, merchant residences, carved doors, stone lanes and white-walled buildings dating mainly from the Ming and Qing dynasties. UNESCO recognizes Hongcun and Xidi as outstanding examples of traditional non-urban settlements shaped by commerce, clan organization and Huizhou regional culture.

Early morning and late afternoon provide the best atmosphere. Staying overnight allows visitors to experience the village before large day-tour groups arrive.

    Xidi Ancient Village

Xidi has a more enclosed and architectural character than Hongcun. Its attractions include the Hu Wenguang Memorial Archway (胡文光牌坊), ancestral halls, former merchant residences and a network of narrow lanes running between whitewashed walls.

Hongcun is generally stronger for waterside photography, while Xidi is particularly rewarding for travellers interested in architecture, woodcarving, stone carving and the social history of Huizhou merchant families.

    Nanping Ancient Village

Nanping (南屏) contains numerous ancestral halls, old residences and maze-like lanes. Because of its traditional appearance, it has been used as a location for Chinese films and television productions and is sometimes promoted as a “Chinese Film Village.”

    Tachuan Village

Tachuan (塔川) is best known for autumn foliage. From late October into November, red, orange and yellow trees surround the village’s white walls and dark roofs. The precise colour season depends on temperature and rainfall.

    Lucun Village

Lucun (卢村) is noted for its elaborate wooden residential interiors, especially the Woodcarving House (木雕楼). It is quieter than nearby Hongcun and can be combined with Hongcun, Tachuan and Mukeng on the same countryside excursion.

    Mukeng Bamboo Forest

Mukeng Bamboo Forest (木坑竹海) offers trails and viewpoints through extensive bamboo-covered hills. It is associated with scenes filmed for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and provides a contrasting natural experience after visiting Huizhou villages.

    Pingshan, Guanlu and Xiuli

Pingshan Village (屏山村) preserves streams, ancestral buildings and traditional houses. Guanlu Village (关麓村) is known for interconnected family residences, while Xiuli (秀里) combines a traditional village atmosphere with landscaped tourism and film-related cultural experiences.

Huizhou District: Ancient Villages and Architecture

    Chengkan Ancient Village

Chengkan is one of Huangshan’s most culturally significant villages. Its streets, watercourses and buildings are traditionally explained through the principles of the Eight Trigrams and yin-yang geomancy.

The village has a history of approximately 1,800 years and preserves numerous nationally protected historic structures. It is a core component of the Ancient Huizhou Cultural Tourism Area, a national 5A tourism complex.

The principal monument is Baolun Pavilion (宝纶阁) within the Luo family ancestral hall complex. Its timber structure, painted decoration and ceremonial spaces represent the high level of Huizhou clan architecture.

    Xixinan Ancient Village

Xixinan is one of the most relaxing villages near central Huangshan. A broad stream, stone bridges and a naturally formed Chinese wingnut forest create an almost woodland-wetland landscape.

The outdoor village area is generally suitable for leisurely walking and photography. Spring and early summer offer the most abundant greenery, although water levels and path conditions vary after rain.

    Tangmo Ancient Village

Tangmo (唐模) is known for its waterways, old streets, ancestral architecture and Tangan Garden (檀干园). The village combines traditional Huizhou settlement planning with landscaped gardens influenced by Jiangnan design.

    Qiankou Ancient Residences Museum

Qiankou Ancient Residences Museum (潜口民宅博物馆) preserves representative Huizhou buildings that were relocated from different parts of the region to prevent their loss. Its houses, ancestral buildings and gateways illustrate changes in residential architecture from the Ming to Qing periods.

    Xie Yuda Tea Culture Museum

Xie Yuda Tea Culture Museum (谢裕大茶文化博物馆) introduces the history, production and trading culture of Huangshan Maofeng tea. It is a useful stop for travellers interested in tea processing and the relationship between Huizhou merchants and regional agriculture.

Shexian County: The Heart of Historic Huizhou

    Huizhou Ancient City

Huizhou Ancient City was historically the administrative centre of Huizhou Prefecture. Unlike a completely enclosed tourist complex, it remains connected with the daily life of local residents.

Major landmarks include Huizhou Prefectural Government Office (徽州府衙), Xu Guo Memorial Archway (许国石坊), Doushan Street (斗山街), city gates, ancestral halls and traditional commercial lanes. Seasonal programmes may include fish-lantern processions, opera, craft markets and immersive performances.

Tangyue Memorial Archways and Bao Family Garden

The Tangyue Memorial Archway Complex (棠樾牌坊群) contains seven major stone arches associated with loyalty, filial piety, chastity and charity. The adjoining Bao Family Garden (鲍家花园) presents landscaped gardens and a large collection of bonsai.

    Xin’an River Landscape Gallery

The Xin’an River Landscape Gallery (新安江山水画廊) combines boat travel with riverside villages, fields and mountain scenery. Spring rapeseed flowers and misty river conditions are particularly photogenic, while autumn provides clearer skies.

    Yangchan Tulou

Yangchan Tulou is a hillside village of rammed-earth buildings rather than the circular communal structures associated with Fujian tulou. The ochre-coloured houses rise in layers along the mountain slope, creating one of Huangshan’s most distinctive rural landscapes.

Autumn is especially popular because villagers display corn, peppers and other produce during the traditional drying season.

    Yuliang Dam

Yuliang Dam (渔梁坝) is a historic stone water-control and transportation structure on the Lianjiang River. It supported river trade between Huizhou and the Xin’an River system and is sometimes described as the “Dujiangyan of Jiangnan.”

    Xiongcun, Xucun and Shitan

Xiongcun Village (雄村) is associated with prominent Huizhou scholar-official families and riverside academy culture. Xucun Village (许村) preserves memorial arches, ancestral buildings and old bridges. Shitan Village (石潭村) is best known for spring flower fields, mountain mist and rural photography.

Xiuning County: Taoist Mountains and Cloud Villages

    Mount Qiyun

Mount Qiyun is one of China’s best-known Taoist mountains. Its appeal comes from a combination of red Danxia cliffs, caves, temples, rock inscriptions and settlements built high above the Hengjiang River.

The principal cultural area is Yuehua Street (月华街), where Taoist temples and traditional houses stand beneath the cliffs. Visitors can ascend by cable car and descend on foot, or complete a longer walking circuit through the mountain.

    Mulihong Village

Mulihong (木梨硔) is a small mountain village built along a ridge. It is famous for cloud seas, sunrise and views across layered mountain valleys. Access involves mountain roads and walking, and the village is best suited to photographers and travellers comfortable with simple rural conditions.

    Wan’an Ancient Town

Wan’an Ancient Town (万安古镇) was historically one of the major commercial settlements of Huizhou. It is particularly associated with the production of traditional Chinese compasses used in geomancy and architectural planning.

    Guchengyan Scenic Area

Guchengyan (古城岩) combines traditional architecture, old streets, ancestral culture and mountain scenery near Xiuning. It is officially recognized as a national 4A attraction.

Qimen County: Forests, Tea and Traditional Villages

    Guniujiang Scenic Area

Guniujiang (牯牛降) is one of southern Anhui’s major forest and biodiversity areas. The wider mountain system reaches more than 1,700 metres and contains old-growth forest, clear pools, waterfalls and protected wildlife habitats.

The Qimen scenic area is suitable for forest walking and summer retreats. Trails may become slippery after rain, so non-slip footwear is important.

Keemun Black Tea Cultural Expo Park

The Keemun Black Tea Cultural Expo Park (祁红产业文化博览园) includes a tea museum, demonstration production line, tea-making workshops and tea gardens. It introduces the history of Keemun black tea, traditionally known internationally as Keemun Tea. The park is a national 4A attraction.

    Lixi Ancient Village

Lixi (历溪) is an old village beside a stream originating in the Guniujiang mountain system. Traditional residences, tea gardens and forested surroundings create a quieter alternative to the more commercial villages of Yixian County.

    Jiulong Pond

Jiulong Pond Scenic Area (九龙池景区) contains a sequence of pools and waterfalls in a forested valley near Guniujiang. It is suitable for summer walking and nature photography.

    Qimen Ancient Stage Complex

The Qimen Ancient Stage Complex (祁门古戏台群) preserves traditional performance stages connected with ancestral halls and village rituals. These structures reflect the importance of opera, clan ceremonies and communal gatherings in historic Huizhou society.

Tunxi District: Old Streets, Museums and Nightlife

    Tunxi Old Street

Tunxi Old Street is the most accessible place to experience Huangshan’s traditional commercial culture. Its shops sell tea, inkstones, brushes, local snacks, medicinal products, woodcarvings and tourist souvenirs.

The architecture retains the white walls, dark tiles, courtyards and narrow shopfronts associated with Huizhou trading towns. The street becomes busiest in the evening.

    Liyang IN Lane

Liyang IN Lane (黎阳in巷) lies across the river from Tunxi Old Street. Historic houses have been adapted into restaurants, cafés, bars, craft shops and boutique accommodation. It offers a more contemporary atmosphere and is particularly lively after dark.

Huashan World and Huashan Mystery Caves

Huashan World · Huashan Mystery Caves (花山世界·花山谜窟) centres on a large group of human-made chambers carved into hills beside the Xin’an River. Their original date and purpose remain subjects of discussion.

The current tourism area combines the caves with lighting, digital exhibitions, cultural performances and evening experiences.

    Xin’an River Riverside Scenic Area

The Xin’an River Riverside Scenic Area (新安江滨水旅游区) includes promenades, bridges, landscaped riverbanks and sightseeing cruises through central Huangshan. Official tourism transport information lists a city cruise connecting riverfront villages, bridges and historic neighbourhoods.

    Major Tourist Attractions Across Huangshan

The following table consolidates the principal scenic areas, ancient villages, cultural attractions and ecological destinations promoted through Huangshan’s official tourism programmes. Best Time to Visit Huangshan

March to May is ideal for spring flowers, tea gardens, misty villages and comfortable mountain hiking. Rain is frequent, but it contributes to the atmospheric clouds and waterways for which Huangshan is famous.

September to November is the best overall period. Temperatures are comfortable, skies are often clearer and villages such as Tachuan and Yangchan become especially photogenic during the autumn colour and drying seasons.

July and August are suitable for mountain retreats, forest valleys and river trips, but Mount Huangshan and the World Heritage villages can be crowded during the school holiday.

December to February offers winter snow, rime ice and quieter ancient villages. Mountain trails may close temporarily during severe weather, and warm waterproof clothing is essential.
