• Core Technique: Bamboo weaving begins with raw moso bamboo, processed through over ten steps—cutting, sawing, splitting, shaving, stretching, weaving, and polishing—entirely relying on the coordination of hands, feet, and mind.
• Split Bamboo – The Soul: Bamboo strips are divided into thin, flexible green strands suitable for delicate weaving, and thicker yellow strips for larger utilitarian items.
• Creating Objects: Strands are interlaced into functional and aesthetic items such as mats, winnowing trays, rice sifters, baskets, hats, backpacks, and dustpans.

Historical Story

Legend says a bamboo artisan once struggled with slow business. During summer, the incessant chirping of cicadas inspired him to weave small bamboo cages to catch cicadas, hung along a shoulder pole, and paraded down the street. The chirping drew crowds, making his bamboo wares popular. This story gave the alley its name, Mingchan Alley (鸣蝉巷), and the bamboo weaving craft has been preserved here ever since.
