Zhuo'er Mountain in Qilian County, Haibei

Zhuo’er Mountain (卓尔山), known in Tibetan as Zongmuma Yuma (宗穆玛釉玛), meaning “the Rosy Queen,” is a national 4A-rated scenic area located in Ladongtai Village, Babao Town, Qilian County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, approximately 6 km north of Qilian County town. With an elevation ranging from 3,100 to 3,400 meters, the mountain features striking red Danxia landforms interwoven with alpine meadows and farmland. It faces Ami Dongsuo (阿咪东索, Niuxin Mountain / 牛心山) across the Babao River and offers 360-degree views of snow-capped mountains, Danxia cliffs, grasslands, and villages. It is often known as the “Switzerland of the East.”

🌿 Seasonal Travel Guide

Mid-to-late July is the best period to visit, when rapeseed flowers and highland barley terraces are in full bloom, creating rich layers of color across the landscape. From late June to early August, the flower fields are still in bloom and visitor numbers are relatively lower. September brings golden autumn scenery, with highland barley turning golden and the landscape becoming quieter and more peaceful. From November to April of the following year, it is the low season, when the red rocks are covered with snow and temperatures are extremely cold.

🌅 Best Time of Day

During the peak season, the scenic area generally operates from 07:00 to 19:30, while in the low season it operates from 09:00 to 17:30. Early morning at sunrise and late afternoon around sunset are the best times for photography, when the sunlight illuminates the Danxia cliffs and the snow-capped Niuxin Mountain. The strong midday overhead light generally produces less impressive photographic results.

🚗 Self-Driving

Navigate to “Zhuo’er Mountain Scenic Area (卓尔山景区).” The scenic area can be reached within approximately 10 minutes from Qilian County town. From Xining, the journey via National Highway G227 takes around 4.5 hours. Parking is available at the scenic area, and ordinary cars can travel comfortably to the site.

Visitors can take a long-distance bus from Xining to Qilian County town and then take a taxi from the county town to the scenic area.

🚌 Getting Around the Scenic Area

Visitors must take the scenic-area shuttle bus to reach the mountain entrance. From there, the entire sightseeing route is explored on foot along wooden walkways, and private cars are not permitted to drive up the mountain.

🔥 Beacon Tower Viewing Platform

Located at the highest point of the scenic area, this viewing platform features the remains of an ancient beacon tower and provides a 360-degree panoramic view. Visitors can look across toward the snow-capped Niuxin Mountain, Babao River, and Qilian County town, making it one of the essential photo stops at Zhuo’er Mountain.

🏔️ Danxia Viewing Walkway

A wooden walkway follows the red Danxia mountainside, allowing visitors to get close to the striking red rock formations while enjoying views of the surrounding alpine meadows.

🏳️ Zhuo’er Mountain White Pagoda and Prayer Flag Area

Traditional Tibetan-style white pagodas and colorful prayer flags blend naturally with the surrounding mountains and landscape, creating a distinctive combination of Tibetan cultural elements and highland scenery.

🌾 Farmland and Terrace Landscapes

In July and August, fields of rapeseed flowers and highland barley spread across the lower slopes in layers, creating one of the most colorful seasonal landscapes around Zhuo’er Mountain.

The recommended visiting time is approximately 2–4 hours. Zhuo’er Mountain can also be combined with Ami Dongsuo (Niuxin Mountain) for a full-day sightseeing itinerary.

Staying in Qilian County town is recommended, where there is a wide selection of hotels and guesthouses. A small number of farm-style guesthouses are also available around the scenic area.

🍖 Local Food

Local specialties include hand-pulled lamb, Qilian yellow mushrooms, yak meat hot pot, and highland barley cakes. Food and drink supplies inside the scenic area are limited, so visitors should bring sufficient drinking water.

Travel Tips and Important Notes

1. During the peak season, combination tickets generally include admission and the scenic-area shuttle bus, and the shuttle bus is mandatory. Student and senior discounts are available according to applicable policies. Visitors with a Shandong household registration can enter without paying the main entrance ticket by presenting their ID card and only need to purchase the sightseeing shuttle ticket. Policies are subject to the latest regulations announced by the scenic area.
2. The elevation ranges from 3,100 to 3,400 meters, so visitors should be aware of the possibility of mild altitude sickness and avoid strenuous running or exercise. The temperature difference between day and night is considerable, so even in summer you should bring a waterproof or windproof outdoor jacket. Ultraviolet radiation is also strong.
3. The Danxia soil and rock formations are extremely fragile. It is strictly prohibited to cross the wooden walkways or walk directly on the mountain formations, helping protect the delicate landscape and local ecosystem.
4. Respect local customs and traditions. Do not step on Mani stones or prayer flags.
5. Visitor numbers can be high during the peak season, so arriving early is recommended. Mountain weather can change rapidly, so bring suitable rain gear.
