    History and Architectural Highlights

    The Famous Breadstone Road

One of the most distinctive features of Central Street is its historic pavement. The entire street is covered with more than 870,000 granite blocks, locally known as Breadstones because of their resemblance to traditional Russian bread loaves.

Each stone measures approximately: 18 cm long, 10 cm wide, 12 cm high. The paving project was completed in 1924 after three years of construction. At the time, a single stone reportedly cost the equivalent of one silver dollar, earning the street the nickname "The Road Paved with Gold." After more than a century of use, the stones have developed a smooth, polished texture that adds unique historical character to every step.

    Open-Air Museum of European Architecture

The street is home to 71 historic European and European-inspired buildings, representing a remarkable collection of architectural styles including Baroque, Renaissance Revival, Art Nouveau, Eclecticism, Neo-Classical, and Byzantine influences. Among them, numerous structures are protected cultural heritage buildings. Walking along Central Street feels like visiting an outdoor architectural museum where every façade tells part of Harbin's international history.

Legacy of the Chinese Eastern Railway Era

Central Street emerged alongside the development of the Chinese Eastern Railway in 1898 and quickly became the commercial center of the city. Russian merchants, European traders, diplomats, and entrepreneurs established businesses here, creating a multicultural urban landscape unlike anywhere else in China. In 1997, the street was officially transformed into a pedestrian-only avenue, preserving its historic atmosphere while becoming one of China's most successful cultural tourism districts.

    Must-See Landmarks Along Central Street

    Southern Iron Gate (南门铁艺大门)

Located at the southern entrance, this elegant European-style gate marks the beginning of Central Street. Its decorative ironwork and vintage design make it a popular first photo stop before starting the northbound walk.

    Modern Hotel (马迭尔宾馆)

Built in 1906, the legendary Modern Hotel (马迭尔宾馆) is one of Harbin's most recognizable landmarks. Highlights include pale green Art Nouveau façade, curved balconies, historic Russian architectural details, and elegant vintage interior. Visitors may freely enter the lobby to admire the preserved décor. The hotel's ground floor is also home to the original Madieer Ice Cream (马迭尔冰棍) shop, one of Harbin's most famous food experiences.

Former Songpu Foreign Trading House (松浦洋行旧址)

Often considered the most photogenic building on Central Street, this landmark showcases classic Baroque architecture. Notable features include decorative domes, sculptural façades, curved balconies, and Greek mythology-inspired statues. Today it houses Songpu 1918 Restaurant (松浦1918西餐厅), allowing visitors to dine inside a beautifully preserved historic building.

Educational Bookstore and Daoli Qiulin Store

Educational Bookstore (教育书店) features vintage European interiors, ornamental windows, elegant dome ceilings, and literary atmosphere. Daoli Qiulin Store (道里秋林商店), established in 1910, remains one of the best places to purchase local specialties including Harbin Red Sausage, Russian Bread, and regional gifts.

    Huamei Restaurant (华梅西餐厅)

Opened in 1925, Huamei Restaurant (华梅西餐厅) is widely recognized as one of China's oldest Russian restaurants. The interior retains Soviet-era relief decorations, brass chandeliers, and traditional wood paneling. Signature dishes include Russian Borscht, Braised Beef in Pot, Pan-Fried Salmon, and Russian Rye Bread. Live accordion performances often enhance the dining experience.

    Flood Control Memorial Tower (防洪纪念塔)

Standing at the northern end of Central Street, this 22.5-meter monument commemorates Harbin's successful flood defense efforts in 1957. It has become one of the city's most important landmarks and serves as the gateway to the Songhua River waterfront.

    Songhua River Waterfront (松花江畔)

Immediately beyond the memorial tower lies the scenic Songhua River. Summer Activities: Riverside walks, river cruises, cycling, sunset viewing. Winter Activities: Ice biking, snow tubing, ice skating, Songhua River Ice Carnival (松花江冰雪嘉年华).

    Shoke Courtyard (肖克庭院)

Hidden in a side alley near the center of the street, this lesser-known location features historic brick walls, Breadstone pathways, vintage atmosphere, and excellent photography opportunities. Many locals refer to it as Harbin's version of "Diagon Alley."
