Zaozhuang Museum (West Hall) is a National Grade II Comprehensive Local History Museum and is located in the Cultural Center area of Xuecheng District, Zaozhuang. The museum houses more than 16,000 cultural relics, including over 60 classified as first-grade cultural relics. Its exhibitions provide a comprehensive overview of the historical development of southern Shandong, beginning with the Beixin Culture more than 7,500 years ago, followed by the ancient pre-Qin states of Xue and Teng, and continuing through the Qin and Han dynasties, Tang and Song dynasties, and the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Drawing on the large number of archaeological discoveries unearthed locally, the museum presents the distinctive regional civilization of southern Shandong, shaped by the interaction and integration of Dongyi Culture, Zoulu Culture, and Chu Culture. It is one of the most important museums for understanding the local history of Zaozhuang. The museum also incorporates VR and AR interactive displays, combining academic research with family-friendly educational and study-tour experiences.
Main Highlights
Dawn of Civilization Exhibition Hall – Second Floor
This exhibition focuses on the Beixin, Dawenkou, and Longshan cultures, displaying unearthed pottery, stone tools, and numerous prehistoric artifacts dating back more than 7,000 years. Through these archaeological discoveries, visitors can gain an insight into the production methods, daily life, and social development of the early inhabitants of southern Shandong, opening the historical narrative of the origins of Zaozhuang civilization.
Pre-Qin Ancient States Exhibition Hall – Third Floor
This is one of the museum’s most important exhibition areas, featuring a large collection of bronze artifacts unearthed from the Dongjiang Site, including important objects associated with the ancient states of Xue and Xiaozhu. The museum’s prized treasure, the Qianfu Vessel (佥父瓶), is also displayed here. The vessel bears valuable inscriptions and serves as an important physical source for studying the ancient pre-Qin states of Shandong.
The exhibition also features numerous bronze ritual vessels, weapons, and chariot and horse fittings. Their elaborate decorative patterns and sophisticated craftsmanship provide an impressive glimpse into the ritual systems, military culture, and material civilization of ancient Shandong. Digital interactive screens are available alongside the exhibits, allowing visitors to explore additional background information about the artifacts.
Grain and Rituals · The Beginnings of Commerce and Industry Exhibition Hall – Fourth Floor
This exhibition is divided into two major historical stages, covering the Qin and Han dynasties and the period from the Wei and Jin dynasties through the Ming and Qing dynasties. Displays include Han Dynasty pictorial stones, various types of ceramics, bronze mirrors, and everyday objects, illustrating the development of agriculture, handicrafts, and commerce in southern Shandong.
The exhibits also trace the historical changes brought about by the development of canal-based trade and commerce, offering visitors a broader understanding of how transportation, economic activity, and local society evolved over the centuries.
Temporary Exhibition Hall – First Floor
The first floor regularly hosts a variety of special exhibitions covering diverse themes such as intangible cultural heritage, Chinese calligraphy and painting, and revolutionary history and culture. Exhibition themes are updated periodically, so visitors are encouraged to check the current exhibition schedule when entering the museum.
