Hainan’s romance is not limited to blue seas and coconut groves. In Ledong, Yinggehai Salt Fields (莺歌海盐场) offer a completely different kind of tropical landscape—a vast world of brilliant white salt, geometric evaporation ponds and shimmering reflections beneath the open sky.

Located in Yinggehai Town (莺歌海镇), the salt fields are one of the largest sea salt production bases in southern China and are often known as the “No. 1 Salt Field of the South China Sea” (南海第一盐场). Hidden between mountains and the coast, this lesser-known destination remains far removed from crowded tourist areas and heavy commercial development.

Across the vast salt fields, countless ponds form an intricate pattern stretching toward the horizon. On sunny days, the shallow water reflects the sky like a natural mirror, while sunset covers the salt fields in a soft golden glow. With its striking white landscapes and peaceful atmosphere, Yinggehai Salt Fields offer one of Hainan’s most distinctive destinations for photography and slow travel.

Explore Vast Salt Fields and a Unique Silver Landscape

Discover a Different Side of Hainan's Natural Beauty

Yinggehai Salt Fields were established in 1958 and are located in Yinggehai Town, Ledong Li Autonomous County. With the mountains of Jianfengling (尖峰岭) rising behind them and the vast South China Sea stretching out in front, the salt fields cover thousands of hectares of interconnected evaporation ponds.

Unlike Hainan’s more familiar beaches and mountain landscapes, this area offers a remarkable combination of industrial heritage and natural beauty. The neatly arranged salt ponds form a vast geometric landscape, with straight lines and orderly patterns extending layer after layer across the land.

On clear days, the deep blue sky contrasts beautifully with the bright white salt crystals. Water collected in the flat salt ponds reflects drifting clouds and the changing sky, creating a mirror-like landscape that resembles a natural “sky mirror.” Nearby salt piles rise in brilliant white formations, looking almost like snow-covered hills or mountains of silver spread across the coastal plain.

Toward evening, the scenery changes again. As the setting sun casts warm light over the salt fields, the silvery white landscape gradually takes on shades of gold. Layers of light and reflection create an especially peaceful and photogenic atmosphere, where mountains, sea, salt fields and human activity come together in one distinctive Hainan landscape.

Wander Through the Salt Fields and Enjoy a Peaceful Escape

Experience Traditional Salt-Making Culture and Unique Photography Spots

A visit to Yinggehai Salt Fields offers a chance to leave crowded beach resorts behind and enjoy a quieter side of Hainan. The area retains much of its traditional salt-making character, allowing visitors to walk through the salt-field landscape and observe the natural process through which seawater gradually evaporates and salt crystals form under the sun.

As you explore, you can learn more about the long history and traditional techniques of sea salt production while appreciating the cultural heritage behind this distinctive coastal industry.

One of the most photogenic features of the salt fields is the network of old railway tracks running deep into the landscape and seemingly extending toward the meeting point of sea and sky. With their weathered industrial appearance, the tracks create a strong sense of nostalgia and have become an excellent setting for photography.

You can walk beside the tracks, explore the surrounding salt fields or simply sit quietly and enjoy the open landscape. Watch clouds move slowly across the sky, see the sunlight sparkle across the salt ponds and take a moment to enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the area.

The site also has a Sea Salt Culture Museum (海盐文化馆), which is open to visitors free of charge. Here, travelers can learn more about the history and development of Yinggehai Salt Fields as well as the knowledge and techniques behind salt production. It is particularly suitable for family visits, educational travel experiences, photography and relaxed exploration.

Explore More of Ledong's Mountains, Coast and Local Flavors

Combine Rainforest Adventures, Coastal Villages and Hainan Cuisine

Yinggehai Salt Fields are located in one of Ledong’s main coastal areas, with several natural and cultural destinations nearby. After exploring the salt fields, you can continue to the magnificent Jianfengling National Forest Park (尖峰岭国家森林公园) to discover Hainan’s tropical rainforest, breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the forest.

You can also visit nearby coastal villages to experience the simple charm of local fishing communities and discover a more traditional side of southern Hainan.

Huangliu Town (黄流镇) is also nearby, where visitors can sample authentic Hainan snacks and enjoy fresh, reasonably priced seafood. By combining these destinations, travelers can experience Ledong through a diverse journey of mountains, rainforest, salt fields, coastal scenery and local cuisine.

Travel Tips for Yinggehai Salt Fields

    Location

Yinggehai Town (莺歌海镇), Ledong Li Autonomous County, Hainan, China. For more accurate navigation, search for the Sea Salt Culture Museum (海盐文化馆) near County Road X780 (780县道).

    Opening Hours

Admission is free, and no advance reservation is required. Visitors can enter and explore the area freely.

    Recommended Visiting Time

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours for your visit. The best time for photography is generally from around 4:00 pm until sunset, when the light becomes softer and less harsh. This is also an excellent time to capture the mirror-like reflections of the salt ponds and the warm colors of sunset.

Ultraviolet light can be particularly strong around the salt fields because of reflection from the bright white surfaces and shallow water, so effective sun protection is essential. Light-colored clothing can also work especially well for photography against the white salt landscape.

Whether you are looking for an unusual photography destination, a peaceful escape from crowded beaches or a deeper understanding of Hainan’s traditional sea salt culture, Yinggehai Salt Fields offer a distinctive journey into one of southern China’s most striking coastal landscapes.
