Yinchuan Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Yinchuan/银川当代美术馆) is a non-profit contemporary art institution located in Yinchuan (银川), the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (宁夏回族自治区). The museum is situated at 12 Hele Road, Huaxia Hetu Art Town (华夏河图艺术小镇禾乐路12号), and it officially opened on August 8, 2015. Covering an area of 35 acres with a building space of 15,000 square meters, MOCA Yinchuan is the largest single-structure contemporary art museum in Northwest China (中国西北). The architectural design, created by the WAA International Design Team (WAA国际建筑设计团队), is inspired by the geological changes caused by the Yellow River (黄河), resulting in a dynamic, fault-like appearance. This innovative design earned the museum the 2015 AR New Architecture Award (AR新锐建筑奖优秀奖).
Architectural Design and Functionality
The museum's design reflects the geological shifts of the Yellow River (黄河) through the use of dynamic rock fold textures (岩石褶皱肌理), with a flowing, fragmented look that mimics geological strata. The museum has seven functional areas, including:
-
Art Exhibition Area (艺术展览区)
-
Commercial Leisure Area (商业休闲区)
-
Education and Training Area (教育培训区)
-
Storage and Logistics Area (储藏物流区)
-
Administrative Office Area (行政办公区)
-
Facilities and Auxiliary Rooms (设备及辅助用房)
-
Traffic Flow Area (交通流现区)
This comprehensive layout allows for diverse activities such as exhibitions, educational programs, and leisure events. The museum’s collections span multiple genres, including late Qing Dynasty oil paintings (晚清油画), maps of early Sino-Western exchanges (中西方交流地图), and a wide range of contemporary Chinese art (中国当代艺术). Since its opening, the museum has hosted nearly 40 international exhibitions, including the 2016 Yinchuan Biennale (银川首届双年展), which attracted artists from 33 countries, and the 2019 "Guardians: 70th Anniversary of China-Russia Diplomatic Relations" Special Exhibition (守望·中俄建交70周年特别展览).

In addition to its exhibitions, MOCA Yinchuan is committed to promoting art education and artistic research. The museum is the designated research hub (研究中心) for the Silk Road Art Research Collaborative Innovation Base (丝绸之路艺术研究协同创新基地), a partnership with the Central Academy of Fine Arts (中央美术学院). This initiative encourages cooperation and the exchange of artistic knowledge between China (中国) and countries along the Silk Road (丝绸之路).
