Why is Wuhou Memorial Temple So Special?

Wuhou Temple (成都武侯祠), also known as Wuhou Shrine Temple of Marquis, is dedicated to Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮), the Marquis Wu (Wuhou) of the Kingdom of Shu in the Three Kingdoms Period. Wuhou Memorial Temple is a commemoration for the emperor Liu Bei (刘备) of Shu Kingdom and his famous adviser Zhuge Liang. It is the only combined memorial temple for both a king and his adviser in China, as well as the most prestigious museum for Shu Kingdom relics and the most famed for the great adviser Zhuge Liang.

Located at Wuhouci Street, Wuhou District of Chengdu City, the Wuhou Memorial Temple is a popular tourist attraction. The temple lies about 7 km from Chengdu Railway Station, and 18 km from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.

What to See in Wuhou Memorial Temple

Liu Bei Hall

Among all the buildings in Wuhou Memorial Temple, the Liu Bei Temple is the highest and the most magnificent. In the central of the hall is a 3-meter-high sitting gilding statue of Liu Bei. The Hall consists of the main hall, side halls and side rooms. Statues of Liu Bei and his grandson Liu Chen are in the main hall, statues of Guan Yu and his son and followers in the east side hall, and statues of Zhang Fei and his sons and grandsons in the west side hall.

Zhuge Liang Hall

Behind Liubei Hall, passing the steps (Wuhou Temple is lower than the Han Zhaolie Temple, symbolize monarch-subject relationship) is a lobby, hanging with "Wuhou Temple" horizontal inscribed board. Wuhou Temple is for memorizing Wuxiang marquis Zhuge Liang in Three Kingdoms Period of Shu Kingdom, so the temple was named Wuhou Temple.

San Yi Temple

Walking across a wide courtyard, you can see an ancient building called “Sanyi Temple” that is the memorial place for the brotherhood of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, and is one of the “must see” places in Wuhou Temple. Going inside, you can appreciate the clay sculptures of these three great historical men sitting calmly but with their own personal characteristics.
