Giant Cypress Forest (巨柏林), also known as Bajie Giant Cypress Nature Reserve (巴结巨柏保护区), is located in Bajie Village (巴吉村), Bayi District (巴宜区), Nyingchi City (林芝市), Tibet Autonomous Region, China.
The forest is located beside the Niyang River (尼洋河), only about 6 kilometers from Bayi Town (八一镇), with an average altitude of 3,000–3,200 meters. It is a National 4A-level Scenic Area and an Autonomous Regional Nature Reserve.
The giant cypress trees of the Yarlung Tsangpo River (雅鲁藏布江) are regarded as “sacred trees” by local Tibetan people. According to legend, these ancient cypress trees were transformed from the hair of the founder of the Bon religion (苯教).
The most famous tree in the forest, the World Cypress King (世界柏树王), is estimated to be more than 3,200 years old. It reaches 57 meters in height, with a trunk diameter of 5.8 meters, requiring more than ten people to surround it with their arms. It is considered the oldest living giant cypress tree in the world and is often called a “living cultural relic” of the plateau.
The entire ancient cypress forest remains lush and green throughout the year. Combined with the surrounding river valley scenery, it offers both primitive forest landscapes and the sacred cultural atmosphere of Tibetan traditions.
