    ★★★
    Turpan Museum吐鲁番博物馆
    (新疆维吾尔自治区吐鲁番市)

Located in Gaochang District, Turpan Museum is a National First-Class Museum and a National 4A Tourist Attraction. It is one of the best places to begin exploring the more than 4,000 years of Silk Road civilization that developed in the Turpan Basin.

The museum houses more than 20,000 cultural relics and collections, many of which were unearthed at major archaeological sites including Jiaohe Ancient City, Gaochang Ancient City, and the Astana Ancient Tombs. Its collections present a continuous historical narrative ranging from prehistoric geological periods and the pre-Qin Western Regions through the Kingdom of Gaochang, the Tang Dynasty, and the Gaochang Uyghur period to modern times.

For travelers visiting Turpan, the museum is highly recommended as an introductory stop before exploring the archaeological sites outside the city. Learning about the region's history, peoples, religions, and Silk Road exchanges here first can make visits to the ancient cities and grottoes much more meaningful.

    Main Highlights

    Giant Rhinoceros Fossil

The Giant Rhinoceros Fossil Exhibition Hall is one of the museum's signature attractions. Its centerpiece is a remarkably complete giant rhinoceros skeleton, representing one of the largest land mammals ever to have lived on Earth.

The enormous skeleton provides an impressive visual introduction to the prehistoric environment of the Turpan region and is one of the museum's most memorable exhibits.

    Turpan General History Exhibition

The Turpan General History Exhibition Hall presents a systematic overview of the region's development along the Silk Road. Exhibits include pottery, wooden carvings, clay figurines, silk textiles, and a large collection of ancient coins.

Together, these artifacts vividly demonstrate the movement of people, goods, religions, technologies, and ideas through the Turpan Basin, as well as the long history of interaction among different ethnic and cultural groups.

    Ancient Documents from Astana

The Ancient Documents Exhibition Hall contains a large collection of documents unearthed from the Astana Ancient Tombs. These include government records, private contracts, letters, and other written materials.

Rather than focusing only on rulers and major historical events, these documents provide rare details about the everyday lives of ordinary people in the ancient Western Regions, offering an unusually personal perspective on Silk Road history.

    Fuxi and Nüwa Silk Painting

The Fuxi and Nüwa Silk Painting is one of the museum's most important national treasures. Its distinctive composition and artistic style make it an outstanding example of the spread and transformation of Central Plains culture in the Western Regions.

The painting is particularly valuable for understanding how religious ideas, artistic traditions, and cultural symbols traveled along the ancient Silk Road.

    Ancient Mummies and Burial Objects

The Mummy and Burial Objects Exhibition Hall displays ancient mummies excavated from the Astana Ancient Tombs, together with remarkably well-preserved wool and hemp clothing, dried foods, flour-based foods, fruits, and other burial objects.

These artifacts vividly demonstrate the extraordinary preservation conditions created by the extremely dry climate of the Turpan Basin. Textiles and food remains that would normally decay rapidly elsewhere have survived for centuries, providing researchers with valuable evidence of ancient life.

    Observation Tower and Cultural-Creative Store

The museum's observation tower offers an elevated panoramic view over Turpan, providing a different perspective on the oasis city and the surrounding basin.

Before leaving, visitors can also stop at the cultural and creative store, where Silk Road-themed souvenirs, replicas inspired by museum artifacts, and commemorative stamps make popular travel keepsakes.

    Tickets and Opening Information

Admission to Turpan Museum is free. Visitors must present the original ID document required for entry. Advance reservation through the museum's official social-media account is recommended, while group visits require advance reservation.

The museum is normally closed on Mondays, except when Monday falls during a statutory public holiday.

During the peak season from April 15 to October 15, opening hours are 10:00 to 18:30, with the last admission at 17:30. During the low season from October 16 to April 14 of the following year, the museum is open from 10:30 to 18:00, with the last admission at 17:30.

Allow approximately 2 hours for a full visit. Electronic audio guides are available for rent, and free scheduled guided tours are offered at designated times.

    Transportation Guide

Turpan Museum is located on Munar Road (木纳尔路) within the urban area. Buses No. 5, No. 6, and No. 201 provide access to the museum.

For travelers arriving by car, a large free parking lot is available. The museum is not far from the city center, making it easy to include in a day of sightseeing around Turpan.

A practical itinerary is to visit Turpan Museum → Jiaohe Ancient City → Karez Wells, while travelers focusing on Silk Road heritage can also continue to the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves on another route.

    Travel Tips

Photography is permitted inside the museum, but flash photography is strictly prohibited. Flash can damage sensitive textiles, painted artifacts, and other fragile cultural relics.

The mummy exhibition contains human remains and may be unsettling for some visitors. If you are uncomfortable with this type of display, you can simply skip the exhibition hall.

Large backpacks and other bulky luggage must generally be left in the designated cloakroom, while small personal bags can be taken into the exhibition areas.

The museum is pleasantly cool indoors, making it an excellent place to escape the intense summer heat of Turpan while continuing to explore the region's history.

Do not touch the exhibits or cross protective barriers. After completing the main exhibitions, consider visiting the cultural and creative area to collect commemorative stamps or purchase Silk Road-themed souvenirs.

For the best historical context, visiting Turpan Museum before Jiaohe Ancient City and the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves is highly recommended. The artifacts and historical explanations in the museum provide essential background that can help visitors better understand the stories, cultures, and civilizations behind the archaeological remains encountered outside the city.
