Located in the Kanas National Nature Reserve (喀纳斯国家级自然保护区) in Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang (新疆阿勒泰地区布尔津县), the Three Bays of Kanas Lake are widely regarded as the most breathtaking natural highlight of the entire Kanas Scenic Area.
Stretching along the upper reaches of the Kanas River, this scenic corridor connects three major river bends from north to south: Fairy Bay (神仙湾), Moon Bay (月亮湾), and Wolong Bay / Dragon Bay (卧龙湾). Each section of the river forms a unique landscape shaped by water flow, forest density, and mountain terrain.
What makes this area truly special is its constantly changing natural scenery. The river shifts in color throughout the day—from emerald green to deep turquoise—while mist, sunlight, and seasonal colors continuously transform the atmosphere. It is one of the most photogenic and emotionally immersive landscapes in northern China.
Fairy Bay (神仙湾) – The Mist-Shrouded Paradise
The Most Dreamlike Section of the Kanas River
Fairy Bay (神仙湾) is the northern starting point of the Three Bays and one of the most peaceful and poetic landscapes in the entire Kanas region. Located just a short distance from the Kanas transfer center, it is characterized by a wide, slow-flowing river surrounded by dense Taiga forest (针叶林) and open wetlands.
The river here spreads gently across multiple channels, forming small sandbanks, grass islands, and shallow waters. During different seasons, the scenery changes dramatically—lush green in summer, golden in autumn, and snow-covered silence in winter.
Morning Mist – The Signature Experience of Fairy Bay
Fairy Bay is most famous for its early morning mist. As the sun rises, warm light meets cold river air, producing soft layers of fog that float above the water surface and drift through the trees.
This creates a surreal atmosphere where forests, water, and sky merge together. Locals often describe it as the moment when “the river becomes a fairy world,” which is why it is called Fairy Bay (神仙湾).
When sunlight breaks through the mist, the entire valley glows in golden tones. This is one of the most iconic natural scenes in Kanas.
Landscape Features and Walking Experience
The riverbanks are lined with Siberian larch, spruce, and white birch forests, forming rich color layers throughout the year. In autumn, the contrast between golden leaves and turquoise water is especially striking.
A well-built wooden boardwalk runs along the river, allowing visitors to walk easily through the landscape. Along the way, several viewing platforms offer different perspectives—some close to the water, others elevated for panoramic views.
The walking route is gentle and suitable for all ages, making Fairy Bay an ideal first stop in the Three Bays journey.
Photography Atmosphere
Fairy Bay is perfect for atmospheric photography. Morning mist, backlight, and forest silhouettes create soft, cinematic images.
It is especially suitable for:
- Misty landscape photography
- Silhouette portraits
- Natural reflection shots
- Soft golden-hour scenery
The best time is early morning when fog is thickest and sunlight is low.
Moon Bay (月亮湾) – The Famous Omega-Shaped River Bend
The Most Recognizable Landmark of Kanas
Moon Bay (月亮湾) is the most iconic and widely photographed landscape in Kanas. The river makes a dramatic Ω-shaped curve, forming a natural masterpiece surrounded by steep forested mountains.
This bend is sharper and more dynamic than Fairy Bay, with faster water flow and stronger visual structure. The combination of curves, forests, and reflections makes it one of the most visually powerful river landscapes in China.
The Legendary “Footprint Sandbars”
At the center of Moon Bay lie two small sand islands shaped like footprints. These formations are tied to local legends—some say they were left by ancient warriors, while others connect them to mythical stories of celestial beings.
Regardless of interpretation, these sandbars have become the symbolic heart of Moon Bay and one of its most photographed features.
Seasonal Beauty and Color Contrast
Moon Bay changes dramatically with the seasons. In summer, the river appears fresh green and full of life. In autumn, the surrounding forest turns golden and red, creating a strong contrast with the deep emerald water.
Snow-capped peaks in the background complete the composition, making the entire valley feel like a natural painting.
On misty mornings, the river surface becomes mirror-like, reflecting trees and mountains with almost perfect symmetry.
Walking and Viewing Experience
Moon Bay has multiple observation platforms located at different heights:
- Upper platform: full panoramic view of the Omega-shaped river
- Middle platform: best view of the “footprint” sandbars
- Lower platform: close-up water textures and river flow
In addition, the wooden boardwalk connecting Moon Bay to Wolong Bay is one of the most scenic walking routes in the entire Kanas region. It passes through dense forest, river viewpoints, and quiet natural sections.
Photography Highlights
Moon Bay is ideal for high-impact landscape photography. The curved river shape naturally creates strong composition lines.
Best subjects include:
- Full river bend panorama
- Drone aerial views of the Ω-shape
- Sandbar close-ups
- Forest and water reflections
- Autumn color contrast scenes
The most recommended time is late afternoon when side light enhances color depth.
Wolong Bay (卧龙湾) – The Calm Dragon-Shaped Lake
The Most Peaceful Stop in the Three Bays
Wolong Bay (卧龙湾) marks the southern end of the Three Bays route. Compared to the dramatic curves of Moon Bay, Wolong Bay feels calm, open, and deeply relaxing.
The river slows down significantly here, forming a wide and tranquil water surface that reflects surrounding forests and mountains like a natural mirror.
The Dragon-Shaped Island
At the center of Wolong Bay lies a long, narrow river island that resembles a sleeping dragon. Covered in vegetation throughout the year, it stands out clearly against the calm water surface.
From above, the shape of the island becomes even more obvious, giving the bay its name—Dragon Bay (卧龙湾).
This natural formation is one of the most peaceful and symbolic landscapes in Kanas.
Reflection and Silence – The Healing Landscape
Unlike the dynamic energy of Moon Bay, Wolong Bay is defined by stillness. The water is often so calm that it perfectly reflects the sky, forest, and snow mountains.
On windless days, the entire landscape becomes symmetrical, creating a “mirror world” effect that feels almost unreal.
This makes Wolong Bay especially popular for travelers seeking quiet moments and emotional relaxation.
Walking Experience
A gentle lakeside wooden boardwalk allows visitors to walk close to the water. The path is short, flat, and easy, making it suitable for all visitors.
Along the way, small viewing platforms provide opportunities to stop and enjoy reflections, photography, or simply sit and appreciate the silence.
Photography Atmosphere
Wolong Bay is ideal for:
- Mirror reflection photography
- Symmetrical compositions
- Minimalist landscape shots
- Sunset glow over water
- Calm, meditative travel portraits
The best lighting conditions occur in the morning and late afternoon when wind is minimal.
Best Time to Visit the Three Bays
Autumn (Mid-September to Early October) – Peak Season
This is the most visually stunning season. Forests turn golden, rivers glow emerald green, and snow peaks contrast sharply with blue skies. Morning mist reaches its peak intensity.
Summer (June to August) – Green Season
Fresh greenery, wildflowers, and comfortable temperatures make this season ideal for families and relaxed travel.
Winter (December to February) – Snow Wonderland
Frozen rivers, snow-covered forests, and complete silence transform the valley into a pure white fairy world.
Spring (April to May) – Revival Season
Melting snow, fresh green grass, and migrating birds bring life back to the valley.
Transportation Overview
Access to all three bays is through the Kanas Scenic Area shuttle system (区间车).
Visitors must first reach the transfer center, then take dedicated shuttle buses to each bay. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the scenic area.
