This hidden gem, affectionately dubbed "Zhoushan’s Jiuzhaigou," offers visitors a deep connection to both nature and the rich tea culture that has flourished here for centuries.
Overview
Tea Valley (Charengu) is located upstream of the Xiamen Reservoir, with the highest peak, Datan Ridge (大坦岭), reaching an elevation of 420 meters. Spanning approximately 30,000 acres, the valley is a lush paradise, home to expansive tea plantations. The valley is renowned for its unique ecological charm, with a variety of ecosystems, including mountains, valleys, streams, waterfalls, and forests, all creating a breathtaking natural environment. The valley’s distinctive feature is its original ecological tea garden, which lies at the 400-meter-high Datan Ridge, where Zen tea has become a special treat.
Entering Tea Valley feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Bamboo and wooden huts and pavilions by the stream offer a glimpse of idyllic rural life. As you walk along winding paths beside the mountain streams, you are greeted by the soothing sounds of water and birdsong. The clear water teems with shrimp and fish, making it easy to forget the hustle and bustle of urban life.
The beauty of the stream is just the beginning of the ecological wonders that Tea Valley has to offer. This creek stretches about 3 kilometers, with various rural delights along its course. The flowing water winds through distinct peaks and stones, at times meandering gently, at times rushing through narrow gorges, and occasionally tumbling down thrilling rapids. Standing beside the stream, visitors can marvel at the peaks and ridges reflected in the water, while fish swim gracefully beneath the surface, further enhancing the valley’s natural allure.
At the uppermost section of the stream lies Xiamen Dragon Pool (厦门龙池). This secluded area, surrounded by towering peaks and steep cliffs, offers a pristine ecological sanctuary. The Dragon Pool, with its jade-green waters reflecting the surrounding mountains, exudes an otherworldly beauty. Local legend holds that, during his childhood, the valley’s owner, Zheng A-San, once witnessed a dragon (or large python) resting at the mouth of the pool. This mystical pool, believed to be connected to the sea, adds an air of mystery to the valley.
Tea Valley also boasts an excellent ecological environment that supports a diverse range of wildlife, including gray swans, egrets, roebucks, sika deer, stone crabs, fish, shrimp, and the endangered giant salamander.
