How to Get There

By car: Set the navigation destination to Banchen Laze (Heima River Sunrise Viewing Platform). The drive from Xining takes approximately three hours. The viewing platform has a parking area, although parking spaces can become scarce in the early morning during the peak season.

By public transportation: Take a bus from Xining to Heima River Town and then take a taxi to the lakeshore. Bus services are relatively limited, so self-driving or hiring a private car is generally more convenient.

Inside the scenic area: Visitors can walk to the lakeshore or choose to take a shuttle bus. Private vehicles cannot drive directly onto the lakeside wetlands.

The Sea-Worship Platform, Prayer Flags and Mani Stones area is a Tibetan-style site associated with traditional lake-worship practices. Colorful prayer flags can be used as a foreground element for photographs, creating memorable compositions that combine the sunrise, lake, and Tibetan cultural landscape. Visitors should walk around the site clockwise.

Lakeside Migratory Birds

Early in the morning, waterbirds can often be seen flying around the lakeshore. Their movements add a natural and dynamic atmosphere to sunrise photography and the overall landscape.

Continue Exploring the Surrounding Area

After watching the sunrise, continue along the Western Qinghai Lake Ring Road. The route offers beautiful views of the lake and allows visitors to combine the sunrise experience with a visit to Garila Temple (尕日拉寺).

Recommended visiting time is approximately 1–2 hours. Because visitors need to get up before dawn, most travelers choose to stay overnight in Heima River Town.

Accommodation: Hotels and local guesthouses in Heima River Town are the most convenient choices. During the peak season in July–August, rooms can be difficult to find, so advance reservations are strongly recommended. Mongolian yurts near the lake can become extremely cold at night, so choose this type of accommodation carefully.

Food: Local specialties include hand-grabbed mutton, yak meat, and Tibetan yogurt. There are generally few or no dining options around the viewing area before sunrise, so bring drinking water and a simple meal or snacks if you plan to watch the sunrise before breakfast.

Travel Tips and Precautions

1. Free entry: The main entrance is free. Shuttle buses are optional and can be purchased according to your needs. Some private grasslands operated by local herders may charge an entrance fee, so confirm the price in advance.

2. High-altitude conditions: The area is approximately 3,200 meters above sea level, so avoid strenuous running or sudden intense exercise. The lakeshore can be extremely cold and windy before dawn. Even in summer, bring a windproof jacket or even a light down jacket, as well as a hat and gloves. Strong ultraviolet radiation is also common at high altitude.

3. Weather matters greatly: Sunrise visibility depends heavily on weather conditions. Heavy fog or cloudy weather can completely prevent visitors from seeing the sunrise.

4. Stay on designated paths: Enjoy the scenery from hardened viewing platforms and boardwalks. Do not enter dangerous wetlands or tidal areas without permission, and avoid trampling grassland vegetation.
