Songyang Academy in Dengfeng, Zhengzhou

Songyang Academy (嵩阳书院) is a National AAAA Tourist Attraction and part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage property “Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in ‘The Centre of Heaven and Earth’.” Located within the Songyang Scenic Area on the southern slope of Mount Song in Dengfeng City, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, it was one of the Four Great Academies of the Northern Song Dynasty. Originally founded during the Northern Wei Dynasty, the site successively served as a Buddhist temple and Taoist monastery before becoming a Confucian academy during the Song Dynasty. Renowned scholars including Sima Guang, Fan Zhongyan, Cheng Hao, and Cheng Yi once taught here, and the famous story of “Standing in the Snow at Cheng’s Gate” is traditionally associated with the academy. Ancient cypress trees and monumental stone steles stand throughout the historic courtyards, making Songyang Academy an important landmark of Confucian culture in the Central Plains. It can easily be combined with Taishi Mountain and Zhongyue Temple.

Best Time to Visit

Season

April to October is the best time to visit, when the ancient cypress trees are lush and the courtyards have a particularly peaceful atmosphere. From November to March, visitor numbers are lower, making this a good period for travelers who want to quietly appreciate the historic architecture and stone inscriptions, although temperatures are relatively low.

Best Time of Day

During the summer opening period from April to October, the academy is generally open from 08:00 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:00. During the winter period from November to March, opening hours are 08:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Morning light is soft and visitor numbers are usually lower, making it an ideal time for sightseeing. Public holidays can be crowded, so visiting outside peak periods is recommended.

Transportation

By Car: Navigate to Songyang Academy. From Zhengzhou, take the Zhengzhou–Shaolin–Luoyang Expressway; the drive takes approximately 1.5 hours. Parking is available near the scenic area, which is also very close to central Dengfeng.

By Public Transportation: Within Dengfeng, Bus No. 2 and Bus No. 6 provide direct access to the scenic area entrance. Travelers arriving from other cities can first reach central Dengfeng and then continue by taxi. For greater flexibility, self-driving is generally recommended.

Getting Around the Scenic Area: The academy consists mainly of level courtyards and can be explored entirely on foot. There are no significant uphill sections, making the visit relatively easy and suitable for most travelers.

🪨 Great Tang Stele

The Stele of the Ode to the Virtuous Response of Songyang Taoist Temple in the Great Tang Dynasty, commonly known as the Great Tang Stele (大唐碑), is one of the largest surviving Tang-dynasty stone monuments in the Central Plains. Standing more than 9 meters high, it was erected in the third year of the Tianbao reign. Its elaborate cap is carved with six dragons, while the inscription is regarded as an outstanding example of Tang-dynasty clerical script. The stele has exceptional historical, calligraphic, and stone-carving value and is protected as a major national cultural relic.

🌲 Han-Dynasty General Cypresses

Two ancient cypress trees, believed to be more than 4,500 years old, are among the most recognizable features of Songyang Academy. According to tradition, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty visited Mount Song and bestowed upon them the titles “Great General” and “Second General.” Their massive, weathered trunks and twisting branches have made them enduring symbols of the academy.

🏛️ Hall of the Sage

The Hall of the Sage (先圣殿) is the academy’s principal ceremonial hall. It enshrines Confucius together with statues of his four principal accompanying sages, and the surrounding courtyard preserves a simple, dignified atmosphere characteristic of traditional Confucian academies.

📚 Lecture Hall

The Lecture Hall is associated with the teaching activities of the brothers Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, two major philosophers of Neo-Confucianism. The famous historical story of “Standing in the Snow at Cheng’s Gate” is connected with this setting, and the hall recreates the atmosphere of traditional scholarly instruction in ancient China.

🏯 Daotong Shrine

The Daotong Shrine (道统祠) is a relatively rare temple specifically dedicated to the transmission of the orthodox cultural and philosophical tradition. It enshrines Emperor Yao, Yu the Great, and the Duke of Zhou, and its distinctive layout reflects the academy’s connection with Confucian concepts of cultural succession.

📖 Library

The Library was traditionally used for storing the academy’s collection of books. Today it also displays a replica of the Golden Tablet of Empress Wu Zetian, introducing the history of her ceremonial activities and imperial worship associated with Mount Song.

💧 Panchi Pool

The Panchi Pool (泮池) is a semicircular pond located in front of the academy. Such pools formed an important part of the ritual and architectural layout of traditional Chinese academies and Confucian educational institutions.

Recommended visiting time: Allow approximately 1.5–2 hours. Songyang Academy can be combined with a hike on Taishi Mountain or linked with Zhongyue Temple to create a full-day cultural itinerary in Dengfeng.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation: There is no accommodation inside the academy. Travelers are advised to stay in central Dengfeng, where a wide selection of hotels and guesthouses is available. Advance booking is recommended during peak travel seasons.

Food: Local specialties include Dengfeng-style stewed noodles, Dengfeng sesame flatbread, and Menzi, a traditional regional dish. Shops inside the scenic area are limited, so visitors are advised to bring their own drinking water.

Travel Tips

Tickets: The individual entrance ticket is RMB 30, while visitors can also purchase a Songyang Scenic Area combination ticket covering Songyang Academy, Taishi Mountain, and Songyue Temple Pagoda. Students and senior visitors can receive discounts with valid identification, while visitors aged 70 and above are exempt from the entrance fee. Current ticket prices are subject to on-site information.

Protect the Cultural Heritage: Songyang Academy is an important protected historic site. Do not touch stone steles or the trunks of ancient cypress trees, do not carve or write on stone inscriptions or architectural components, and do not use flash photography inside the historic halls.

Protect the Ancient Trees: The ancient cypresses are valuable cultural and natural heritage. Visitors should not climb, shake, or otherwise damage the trees.
