Why is Six Harmonies Pagoda So Special?

Liuhe Pagoda is one of the best existing ancient pagodas with brick and wood structure in China. The name of Liuhe pagoda comes from "Liuhe Jing" of Buddhism. The Pagoda was built at that time to suppress the tide of Qiantang River. The tower is 59.89m high, and its construction style is very unique. The internal masonry structure of the tower is divided into seven layers, and the external wood structure is 8 sides and 13 layers. Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty inscribed for each floor of the Six Harmonies Pagoda.

Where is Six Harmonies Pagoda

Liuhe Pagoda is located on Yuelun Mountain to the south of the West Lake and facing Qiantang River. The address in Chinese is 浙江省杭州市西湖区之江路16号. Liuhe Pagoda lies about 9 km from Hangzhou Railway Station.

About Six Harmonies Pagoda

History

The Six Harmonies Pagoda was built in the third year of Kaibao in the Northern Song Dynasty (970 A.D.), and was named the Six Harmonies Pagoda in the meaning of "Six Harmonies" in Buddhism. Now the Liuhe Pagoda we can see was built in the Southern Song Dynasty.

Architecture

The pagoda is octagonal in shape and some 59.89 meters (196 feet) in height, it also has the appearance of being a thirteen-story structure, though it only has seven interior stories. Each story of the pagoda consists of four elements, the exterior walls, a zigzagged corridor, the interior walls and a small chamber. 

Tidal Watching

Liuhe Tower is a famous tide watching resort. Qiantang River tide is a masterpiece of nature. It is known as a world wonder. It can be enjoyed every day in the whole year, especially around the Mid Autumn Festival. As early as the Southern Song Dynasty, the Liuhe Tower was one of the best places to watch the autumn tide of Qiantang River.
