If Wenchang’s bays are known for their gentle and romantic beauty, then Stone Park (石头公园) reveals a far wilder and more dramatic side of the coast. Located in Longlou Town (龙楼镇), Stone Park is a rare natural coastal landscape in Hainan, known for its rugged volcanic rocks and sea-eroded shoreline shaped by millions of years of geological activity. It was also used as a filming location for the birth of the Stone Monkey in the 1986 television adaptation of Journey to the West.

Far from the noise of heavily commercialized tourist areas, Stone Park brings together extraordinary rock formations, turquoise sea, crashing waves and wide blue skies. Here, you can walk along the rocky coast and listen to the roar of the waves, admire spectacular natural scenery and look toward the Wenchang space launch area in the distance. It is one of Wenchang’s hidden coastal gems for sightseeing, photography and a peaceful escape into nature.

Discover an Ancient Volcanic Coast Shaped by Nature

Explore One of Hainan's Most Dramatic Rocky Shorelines

Stone Park is located in Longlou Town, Wenchang, near the foothills of Tongguling (铜鼓岭). The area is known for its distinctive basalt coastal landscape, shaped by ancient volcanic activity and long-term erosion by the sea. Over an immense geological timescale, volcanic eruptions beneath the ocean and the continuous movement of waves helped create this remarkable stretch of coastline.

Unlike many conventional beach destinations, the coast here has not been excessively altered by artificial development. Thousands of large volcanic rocks are scattered and stacked along the shoreline, each with its own distinctive shape and character. Their dark, rugged surfaces create a striking contrast with the clear blue water of the sea, resulting in a powerful and untamed landscape that is difficult to find at ordinary sandy beaches.

The coastal scenery is rich and varied, with several distinctive areas offering different views. Vast groups of enormous rocks create an impressive natural stone landscape, while rugged boulders rise dramatically along the coast. The iconic Wind-Rocking Stone (风动石) stands prominently on the mountain, said to move slightly in the breeze while remaining balanced in place after centuries of wind and weather, making it one of the area's most fascinating natural wonders.

Elsewhere, relatively flat granite platforms extend toward the sea. During low tide, natural pools form among the rocks and reflect the blue sky and white clouds, creating a mirror-like scene with a particularly photogenic atmosphere. Sea caves and sea cliffs can also be found along the coast, where waves crash against the rocks with a powerful roar. Every part of this landscape seems to preserve a story from Hainan’s long geological history.

Explore the Coast and Enjoy a Relaxed Seaside Adventure

Walk Among Strange Rocks, Listen to the Waves and Discover the Shoreline

Stone Park offers a variety of easy and enjoyable experiences for visitors of different ages. There is no need for a long or demanding hike. Simply walking along the coast allows you to immerse yourself in the spectacular combination of rugged rocks and open sea views.

Follow the seaside boardwalk at a relaxed pace, where mountain and ocean scenery unfolds around almost every corner. The dramatic contrast between dark volcanic rocks and the bright blue sea creates excellent opportunities for photography.

Unusual natural stone formations can be found throughout the park. Some have been given imaginative names, including Turtle Rock (神龟石), the Journey to the West Stone Monkey (西游石猴) and Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl (双龙戏珠). Their naturally formed shapes make exploring the park especially interesting, and visitors can take their time searching for these distinctive rock landscapes and capturing memorable photos.

Stone Park is also an excellent place to simply slow down and relax. Sit on one of the huge coastal rocks, listen to the wind blowing in from the sea and watch the waves surge toward the shore. The peaceful yet powerful natural surroundings offer a refreshing break from the pace of everyday travel.

At low tide, the gaps between the rocks reveal small crabs, shells and other coastal creatures. Exploring the shoreline and enjoying the fun of beachcombing can be especially rewarding for families traveling with children.

On clear days, visitors may be able to see the launch towers of the Wenchang space launch area from the coast, creating a remarkable combination of natural mountain-and-sea scenery and China’s aerospace landscape. With excellent timing and a little luck, you may even witness the unforgettable sight of a rocket launch, making the experience at Stone Park truly unique.
