    Shalu Monastery in Shigatse夏鲁寺

    Shalu Monastery, also known as Schalu Kloster, is a small monastery located 22 kilometers (14 miles) south of Shigatse in Tibet. Let’s explore its fascinating aspects:

    1. Introduction:
      • Founded in 1040 by Chetsun Sherab Jungnay, Shalu Monastery has a rich history.
      • For centuries, it was renowned as a center of scholarly learning and psychic training.
      • Its mural paintings were considered to be the most ancient and beautiful in Tibet.
    2. Feature and Architecture:
      • Shalu Monastery is a perfect combination of Han and Tibetan architectural styles.
      • The main structure, called Xalhulhakang, is architecturally distinctive:
        • It has an arch-like ceiling covered with glazed tiles.
        • The steep eaves resemble the wings of a flying bird.
        • The structure is a replica of inland temples.
      • The monastery consists of two floors:
        • The main hall on the first floor covers an area of 1,500 square meters (1,794 square yards).
        • It houses statues of Sakyamuni and his disciples.
        • Two sutra depositories exhibit the important classics of Tibetan Buddhism: Tanjur and Kanjur.
        • The second floor follows a typical Chinese quadrangle layout with four halls.
    3. Four Treasures:
      • Printing board of Tibetan Buddhist scripture: Made of 108 blocks of sandalwood, it is believed to bring luck.
      • Holy jar: Covered and sealed with red cloth, its water is considered the purest in the world.
      • Stone tablet inscribed with six characters: Engraved with delicate small pagodas.
      • Huge stone like a basin: Said to never overflow even on the rainiest day.
    4. How to Visit:
      • Take a bus from Lhasa Xijiao Bus Station to Shigatse.
      • Hire a local car to reach the monastery.
      • Bus fare: CNY 90 - 140; car fare: around CNY 100 for a round trip.
