    Rehe Confucian Temple in Chengde热河文庙
    (河北省承德市)

Rehe Confucian Temple (热河文庙) is located at No. 33 West Street, Shuangqiao District, Chengde City, Hebei Province. Built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty between 1776 and 1779, it was the royal Confucian temple of the Qing imperial family and the only Confucian ritual architectural complex among the Eight Outer Temples (外八庙) of Chengde Mountain Resort (避暑山庄).

In the past, it served as the highest-level official school of Chengde Prefecture. Emperor Qianlong visited the temple many times to conduct ceremonies honoring Confucius. The existing buildings are restored structures covering an area of approximately 28,900 square meters, preserving the traditional Confucian temple layout of “temple on the left and school on the right (左庙右学)”.

    Best Time to Visit

    Seasonal Recommendations

April to October is the best period to visit Rehe Confucian Temple. From May to June, the ancient cypress trees in the courtyard are lush and green, creating a peaceful atmosphere. July to August is suitable for exploring indoor exhibitions while escaping the summer heat. September to October offers soft autumn sunlight, making it an excellent season for photographing traditional architecture.

From November to March of the following year, temperatures are relatively low, but visitors can still appreciate the ancient buildings and historical inscriptions in a quieter atmosphere.

    Daily Visiting Time

The temple is generally open from 09:00 to 17:00, with entry stopping at 16:30.

Morning is the best time to visit, when the light is softer and ideal for viewing stone inscriptions and ancient architecture. The quiet courtyard atmosphere also allows visitors to slowly experience the traditional Confucian cultural environment.

    Transportation Guide

    By Car

Navigate to “Rehe Confucian Temple (热河文庙)”. It is located on West Street in central Chengde, with a small parking area available nearby.

    Public Transportation

Visitors can take Chengde city buses No. 2, No. 5, or No. 7 and get off at Zhongyi Hospital Station (中医院站), then walk to the temple. Self-driving is also convenient.

    Inside the Scenic Area

The entire temple complex is explored on foot through the courtyards and historical buildings.

    Core Attractions

🏯 Pan Pond and Zhuangyuan Bridge (泮池与状元桥/泮桥)

The Pan Pond and bridge are iconic Confucian temple ritual structures. A semicircular pond is crossed by a stone bridge, and according to ancient traditions, students who passed the imperial examination to become scholars were allowed to enter the temple through the bridge.

The combination of red walls, ancient cypress trees, and the peaceful pond creates an excellent setting for traditional architecture photography.

🪨 Dacheng Gate and Imperial Stone Inscriptions (大成门与御制石刻)

Inside Dacheng Gate, visitors can see valuable Qing Dynasty imperial stone inscriptions, including “Imperially Written Record of the Ten Great Campaigns (御制十全记)” created by Emperor Qianlong.

These inscriptions preserve important historical records about frontier campaigns and imperial history, making them significant cultural relics of the Qing period.

    🏛️ Imperial Stele Pavilion (御碑亭)

The pavilion houses an imperial stone stele commissioned by Emperor Qianlong. The front side contains “Stele Record of Rehe Confucian Temple (热河文庙碑记)”, explaining the reasons for establishing the temple, while the back side features “Eight Rhymes with Preface on Records of Chengde Prefecture in Rehe (热河承德府记事八韵有序)”, describing the historical and cultural development of the Rehe region.

    🏮 Dacheng Hall (大成殿)

Dacheng Hall is the main building of the Confucian temple. Featuring yellow glazed roof tiles and red walls in royal architectural style, it enshrines Confucius along with the Four Associates and Twelve Philosophers of Confucianism.

The hall also displays Qing Dynasty imperial calligraphy plaques, creating a solemn and magnificent atmosphere.

📚 East and West Side Halls and Zunjing Pavilion (东西庑与尊经阁)

The east and west side halls display exhibitions about local education history in Rehe and the development of Confucian culture.

Zunjing Pavilion was once used for storing books and teaching. Today, it preserves a restored layout reflecting the traditional Qing Dynasty prefectural school system.

The recommended visiting time is 1.5–2 hours. Rehe Confucian Temple can be combined with Chengde Mountain Resort (避暑山庄) and Puning Temple (普宁寺) to create a cultural sightseeing route in Chengde city.

    Accommodation and Food

    Accommodation

There is no accommodation inside the scenic area. Visitors can stay at hotels in Chengde city.

    Local Food

Recommended Chengde specialties include Eight Big Bowls (承德八大碗), Lüdagun (驴打滚), and buckwheat noodles. There are no restaurants inside the temple, so visitors should bring drinking water if needed.
