Brief Introduction of Hong Kong Racing Museum

The Hong Kong Racing Museum is located on the 2nd floor of the stand in the Happy Valley Racecourse. The Hong Kong Racing Museum opened on October 18, 1996, covering more than 6,000 square feet. The Museum has eight exhibition halls, a cinema for 84 people and a gift gallery. The themes of the pavilions include the history of horse racing in Hong Kong, the development of Happy Valley Racecourse and Sha Tin Racecourse, as well as the information of several generations of famous horses, including the skeleton of Silver Lining(马王禄怡). Short films on horse racing are regularly shown in the cinema to give visitors a better understanding of the history of horse racing in Hong Kong.

Exhibition Hall of Hong Kong Racing Museum

The exhibition showcases short films of early Chinese Mongolian ponies moving from the north to Hong Kong and Australian horses. It introduces the changes and development of the Hong Kong Happy Valley Racecourse since 1846, the construction process of Shatian Racecourse, horse racing equipment, riding skills, and weights used to measure the weight of jockeys. The last champion horse trainers, jockeys and apprentices in Hong Kong were introduced in an interactive way, including interviews. There are all kinds of information about Silver Lining, the best horse races and the fragments of the race.

The museum also simulates horse breeding and training, and produces Mini models. The most special items on display are some previous certificates, tools and trophies. In 1861, the American community in Hong Kong presented the pure silver medal to Marseilles. Because the American flag is commonly known as the flower-like flag in Cantonese, the trophy is named Citigroup Cup.
In the corner of the horse racing museum, there is also an exhibition hall dedicated to charity. More than 500 pieces of artistic creations of special kindergarten centers and special school students are on display.

Silver Lining

Silver Lining (1973-1995) is a purebred race horse produced in Australia. She has been three Hong Kong horse kings (1977/78, 78/79 and 80/81) and has set a record of fifteen victories, representing the era when Wu Zhilin(吴志林) and George Moore(佐治摩亚) dominated the Hong Kong Horse Circle. The horse raced 32 times in Hong Kong, each time passing the end of the race as the top six. It was the first horse race in the history of Hong Kong with a total bonus exceeding one million. The horse owner was Mr. Yong Yongdao, a well-known accountant.

How to Get There

There are two ways to get there which are by bus or subway.Toursts can take subway to Exit A of MTR Causeway Bay Station, then walk along Matheson Street to Wong Nai Chung Road and then continue to walk for approximately 15 minutes. Tourists also can take No75, No.90 and No.97 Buses from Exchange Square Bus Terminus (near MTR Hong Kong Station, Exit D). Alight outside the museum.
