A Taoist Temple with a Long History

Originally known as Qunyu An (群玉庵) and also called Yaochi (瑶池), the temple has been celebrated in Chinese poetry since ancient times. The poet Cao Zhi (曹植), son of the famous warlord Cao Cao (曹操), once wrote, “Eastward I pass the dwelling of the Queen Mother, overlooking the Five Sacred Mountains.” The Tang dynasty poet Li Bai (李白) also praised it with the verse, “Morning I drink from Queen Mother Pool, at dusk I lodge at Heavenly Gate Pass.”

The Unique “王” Character Plaque

The stone plaque above the entrance gate features a highly unusual rendering of the Chinese character Wang (王). It was inscribed in 1824 by Xu Zonggan (徐宗干), magistrate of Tai’an (泰安). Unlike standard script, this “王” incorporates symbolic strokes representing Heaven (天) above, Man (人) in the middle, and Earth (土) below, reflecting Taoist cosmology and reverence for the Queen Mother of the West.

Springs and Ancient Trees

The temple courtyard houses the crystal-clear Queen Mother Spring (王母泉), alongside centuries-old trees, including a 300-year-old wintersweet (lamei 腊梅) and a snow-white blooming fringe tree (liusu 流苏树), which bring distinct beauty in each season.

• Main Hall (正殿, Middle Courtyard): Houses a Ming dynasty bronze statue of the Queen Mother. Flanked by side halls.

• Hall of the Seven Perfected Ones (七真殿 / Qizhen Hall): Located in the rear courtyard atop a high platform, this hall once housed lifelike Ming dynasty clay sculptures of Taoist immortals such as Lü Dongbin (吕洞宾), Li Tieguai (李铁拐), and He Xiangu (何仙姑). The originals were lost during the 1960s, but replicas were created in 1986.
