Best Time to Visit Qinhuai River

The Qinhuai River can be enjoyed year-round, with March to May and September to November generally offering the most comfortable weather for walking and sightseeing.

Spring brings fresh green willows along the riverbanks, while the cool evening air of autumn makes a night cruise especially pleasant. Around Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival, the annual Qinhuai Lantern Festival transforms the river into a spectacular display of illuminated lanterns. It is one of the liveliest times of year to visit, although crowds can be extremely heavy.

For the best combination of daytime scenery and nighttime atmosphere, plan your visit between 17:00 and 21:00. Arrive around sunset to enjoy the changing light over the river, then stay as the lanterns and riverside buildings gradually illuminate.

Sightseeing boats generally operate into the evening. During public holidays, queues can become very long, so boarding earlier is recommended. Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a combination of riverside walking and a boat cruise.

Early morning is another good option for travelers who prefer a quieter atmosphere. With fewer visitors and a calm river surface, the Qinhuai River feels particularly peaceful before the city wakes up.

How to Get to Qinhuai River

The central section of the Ten-Mile Qinhuai is located in Nanjing’s historic Qinhuai district, where roads can become congested. Public transportation is recommended.

By Metro: Take Line 3 to Confucius Temple Station, then use Exit 2 or 3 and walk for approximately 3–5 minutes to Panchi Wharf. Alternatively, take Line 1 to Sanshanjie Station, Exit 4, and walk for around 10 minutes to the riverside.

By Bus: Routes 1, 4, 40, and 44 stop near Jiankang Road–Confucius Temple, from where the Qinhuai River is only a short walk away.

By High-Speed Train: Travelers arriving at Nanjing South Railway Station or Nanjing Railway Station can transfer to the metro for convenient access to the Qinhuai River area.

Driving into the old city is not recommended during busy periods. Parking is limited, especially around major holidays, so visitors arriving by car should consider parking outside the busiest area and continuing on foot.
