Toutuo Ridge, the main summit of Purple Mountain, rises to approximately 448 meters above sea level. From the summit, visitors can enjoy expansive views across Nanjing, including the Yangtze River, Xuanwu Lake, and the city skyline.

Best Time to Visit Purple Mountain

Purple Mountain can be enjoyed throughout the year, with March to May and September to November generally offering the best conditions.

Spring brings plum blossoms, fresh green forests, and comfortable hiking temperatures. In autumn, the trees around the Sacred Way and mountain slopes turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, creating some of the most beautiful scenery of the year.

Summer is a good time to escape the heat in the shaded mountain forests, while winter has a special atmosphere after snowfall, when historic buildings and ancient trees can be covered in white.

For sightseeing, arriving around 8:00–9:00 in the morning allows you to avoid many tour groups and enjoy cooler temperatures. If your priority is the mountain panorama, begin your hike after 15:00 and stay for sunset.

Exploring the major historic attractions across Purple Mountain requires a full day. If you only want to hike to the summit and enjoy the panoramic views, allow approximately 3–4 hours.

How to Get to Purple Mountain

Because Purple Mountain covers a large area, the best transportation option depends on which attractions you plan to visit.

Southern Slopes: Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling & Meiling Palace

Take Metro Line 2 to Xiamafang Station for convenient access to Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Muxuyuan Station, Exit 1, provides convenient access to Gate 3 of Ming Xiaoling.

Zhongshan Scenic Area sightseeing buses connect the major attractions, including Ming Xiaoling, Meiling Palace, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, and Linggu Temple. A single ride costs around RMB 10, while multi-ride options can save considerable walking.

Summit Area: Toutuo Ridge, Observatory & Cable Car

For a popular hiking route, take Metro Line 4 to Jiangwangmiao Station, Exit 1. The route from here involves a relatively steep series of steps and is suitable for visitors looking for a more direct climb.

For an easier route, Jiuhuashan Station on Line 4 provides access toward Bailu Park, from where the trail is generally gentler and more suitable for beginners.

The lower station of the Purple Mountain Cable Car can also be reached by local sightseeing transport, allowing visitors to save energy and travel directly toward the summit area.

By High-Speed Train

Visitors arriving at Nanjing Railway Station or Nanjing South Railway Station can transfer to the metro for convenient access to different parts of Purple Mountain.

Because the scenic area is extensive, parking can be extremely difficult during weekends and holidays. Public transportation is strongly recommended.
