  • Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon in ZhangyeGansu,Zhangye
  • Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon (Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon 平山湖大峡谷) is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in northwestern China and among the top places to visit in Zhangye (Zhangye 张掖). Located approximately 56 kilometers northeast of downtown Zhangye in Pingshanhu Mongolian Township (Pingshanhu Mongolian Township 平山湖蒙古族乡), this vast canyon landscape covers nearly 100 square kilometers and combines dramatic canyon systems, Danxia formations, and Yardang-style erosional landforms.

Often called the "Colorado Grand Canyon of China", the canyon features towering red sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, narrow slot canyons, and surreal rock formations sculpted by wind and water over millions of years. Its remote setting, rugged terrain, and striking colors make it one of the most impressive geological destinations along the ancient Silk Road.

Why Visit Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon?

Unlike the colorful striped formations of nearby Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park (Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park 张掖七彩丹霞), Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon offers a far more immersive adventure experience. Visitors can descend deep into the canyon, walk through narrow passages, climb ladders, and explore landscapes that resemble scenes from Mars or the American Southwest.

    Highlights

    • One of China's most spectacular canyon landscapes
    • Massive red sandstone formations and deep gorges
    • Narrow slot canyons and dramatic rock corridors
    • Thrilling cliff ladders and adventure routes
    • Stunning sunrise and sunset photography
    • Relatively uncrowded compared with other famous Chinese attractions
    • Easy combination with Zhangye Danxia and other Hexi Corridor attractions

    Summer (July–August)

Summer brings clear skies and vivid canyon colors. Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times to explore.

    Temperature: 28–32°C during the day

    Autumn (September–October)

Autumn offers excellent visibility, mild weather, and beautiful contrasts between blue skies and red rock formations.

    Temperature: 10–22°C

    Winter (November–March)

Winter transforms the canyon into a quiet wilderness with occasional snow-covered cliffs and very few visitors.

    Temperature: -10°C to 5°C

    Travel Tip

Avoid exploring the canyon floor between noon and mid-afternoon during summer, when temperatures can become extremely hot. Rainy days may result in temporary closure of canyon trails for safety reasons.

Named for rock formations resembling giant lingzhi mushrooms, this area features striking red-and-white geological layers and a winding staircase leading to higher viewpoints.

    60-Meter Sky Ladder (云梯)
