  • Nietang Buddha in LhasaTibet,Lhasa
  • The Nietang Buddha (聂唐大佛) is the largest cliff sculpture in Tibet, located about 40 kilometers southwest of Lhasa (拉萨市). It is a seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha (释迦牟尼佛), depicting the moment when Buddha overcame Mara under the Bodhi tree and achieved enlightenment. This magnificent sculpture stands at 9.83 meters tall and is carved into the northern slope of Nietang Mountain (聂唐山), east of the Lhasa River (拉萨河) and near the Lhasa-Zedang Highway (拉泽公路).

The statue is impressive in both scale and artistic design, with the seated height measuring 1.3 meters, the hand length extending to 1.4 meters, and the legs measuring 1.9 meters. The statue is rendered in high relief, with balanced proportions and bold, strong lines, making it one of the finest examples of Tibetan stone carvings. This sculpture is recognized as an early work from the later period of the Tibetan Buddhism (藏传佛教) propagation, known for its rugged style that highlights the unique texture and strength of the stone.

The Nietang Buddha is regarded as one of the most significant examples of Tibetan stone sculptures and is often praised for its magnitude and artistic excellence.

    Legend of the Buddha

A popular legend surrounds the creation of the Nietang Buddha. Over 700 years ago, during the Yuan Dynasty (元朝), a spiritual leader named Babasa (八思巴), who was the chief lama of the Yuan court, was returning to Sakya Monastery (萨迦寺) from Dadu (now Beijing, 大都). During his journey, the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha he was carrying reportedly spoke, saying that it wished to remain in the area. This led to the creation of the giant Buddha statue, adding a mystical element to its origin.

This legend is a cornerstone of local culture and is still told by the residents of Tibet, embodying the deep spiritual connection between the people and the land.
