    Midui Glacier in Nyingchi米堆冰川
    (西藏自治区林芝市波密县)

Midui Glacier (米堆冰川) is one of Tibet’s most remarkable oceanic glaciers, located in the upper reaches of the Midui River (米堆河), a secondary tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo River (雅鲁藏布江). It merges with the Palongzangbu River (帕隆藏布江) at the 84 km mark along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (川藏公路). Easily accessible and large in scale, Midui Glacier is a classic example of a southeast Tibetan oceanic glacier. Its spectacular features, including beautifully developed arc structures, icefalls, and glacier-fed lakes, make it a rare natural wonder and a must-visit destination for tourists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

    Location and Accessibility

Midui Glacier is situated within Yupu Township (玉普乡), Bomi County (波密县), in the Nyingchi Region (林芝地区) of southeastern Tibet. The glacier is approximately 103 km from Bomi County town, 8 km from National Highway 318 (G318, 国道318), and just 2 km from the nearest village. Its main peak reaches an elevation of 6,800 meters, with the permanent snowline at 4,600 meters, offering dazzling year-round snowy scenery.

The glacier is surrounded by mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, fertile farmland, and picturesque Tibetan villages, creating an idyllic blend of nature and human life.

    Natural Wonders of Midui Glacier

Midui Glacier boasts a spectacular array of natural features:

    • Glacial Icefalls: The glacier is fed by world-class icefalls over 800 meters high and more than 1,000 meters wide, cascading dramatically into glacial basins.
    • Glacial Arc Structures: The glacier’s arcs are unique and fully developed, resembling the ribcage of a mythical dragon, formed by seasonal temperature and moisture variations.
    • Glacial Lakes: At the terminus, ice-fed lakes glimmer with bluish light, reflecting the glacier’s pristine beauty.
    • Flora: The lower glacier flows through dense coniferous-broadleaf mixed forests, home to blooming wildflowers, including rhododendrons, and vibrant alpine meadows.
    • Fauna: Herds of yaks and goats graze in the pastures, while wild monkeys and other alpine animals inhabit the forested areas.

This combination of glacier, lake, forest, and human settlement demonstrates a perfect harmony between people and nature, making Midui Glacier a unique destination for ecological tourism.

    Cultural and Human Attractions

At the foot of the glacier lies Midui Village (米堆村), a traditional Tibetan settlement in Yupu Township (玉普乡). The village benefits from its relatively low altitude and moist climate, creating fertile farmland and lush forests.

    • Houses are often two-story wooden Tibetan homes, with half of the second floor serving as sun terraces for drying wheat and barley.
    • Courtyards are spacious and often decorated with tall trees and fluttering prayer flags (风马旗), giving the impression of a forest park.
    • Local villagers are known for their warmth and hospitality, inviting travelers for a cup of Tibetan tea or even a home-cooked Tibetan meal.

Visiting the village offers a rich cultural experience alongside the natural spectacle of the glacier.

    Glacier Features

Midui Glacier is a modern, temperate monsoon glacier with complete glacier types:

    • Glacial basins and icefalls: Massive basins accumulate snow and ice, feeding icefalls that drop 700–800 meters in height.
    • Balanced replenishment and melting: The glacier maintains equilibrium between accumulation and ablation, forming continuous icefalls rather than “hanging glaciers.”
    • Arc structures: The arcs above the ablation zone are among the most clearly developed in the world, forming a rare glacial phenomenon.
    • Integration with the environment: The glacier coexists with farms, forests, lakes, and villages, providing a unique tableau for tourism and ecological studies.

Its proximity to Sichuan-Tibet Highway (川藏公路) allows for easy access while offering views of the full glacial scale.
