About 20–25 km from Miyun County, it connects north to Fengning County in Hebei Province and borders Huairou District to the northwest. Built originally during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–559), it underwent large-scale renovation during the Ming Dynasty under the Wanli Emperor (1573–1620), serving historically as a strategic northern gateway to Beijing.
