Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in Sertar County, Garze

Larung Gar Buddhist Academy (色达五明佛学院), also known as the Wuming Buddhist Institute, is one of the largest and most important centers for Tibetan Buddhism in the world. Located in Luoruo Town (洛若镇) of Sertar County (色达县) in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (甘孜藏族自治州) in Sichuan Province, it sits at an impressive 3,900 meters above sea level, surrounded by the awe-inspiring Tibetan landscape. The academy belongs to the Nyingma School (宁玛派) of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as a major hub for the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and culture.

Historical Background

The academy's origins trace back to the late 19th century when Dejang Dorje (德绛多吉) established a “Ritru” (日追) retreat for practitioners of the Nyingma tradition in 1880. Over time, this modest retreat grew into a significant religious and educational center.

Development Through the Years

  • In the 1980s, the monk Jinmei Pengcuo (晋美彭措) expanded the retreat, establishing small teaching and meditation halls, initially housing 32 students.

  • By 1993, the center had grown to more than 2,000 students and 54 teachers, officially becoming Larung Gar Buddhist Academy (喇荣寺五明佛学院) in 1997. The academy began to attract thousands of students from across Tibet and beyond, thanks to its reputation for rigorous Buddhist education.

  • By the late 1990s, the academy faced rapid growth, which also brought challenges. The infrastructure, fire safety, health conditions, and security became major concerns.

Recent Reforms and Developments

  • In 2013, the region underwent administrative changes, with Luoruo Town (洛若镇) being established and the academy integrated into the town’s overall development plan. The local government took significant steps to improve the living conditions, including the demolition of unauthorized structures and strict management protocols to regulate the growth of the academy.

  • 2014 saw a major setback when a fire broke out in the Jiumu Sutra Hall (觉姆经堂) due to an electrical short circuit, destroying 150 monk dormitories. However, this event led to improved infrastructure, including a significant investment from the local government to upgrade the electrical systems and ensure the safety of the academy's buildings.

  • By 2015, 400 monks were relocated to a newly established social welfare center in Luoruo Town, and in 2016, a new community healthcare service center was completed, providing better medical support for the monks and residents.

  • In 2017, the academy saw further institutional reforms with the establishment of the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy Administrative Committee and the Larung Temple Management Committee. This was part of an ongoing effort to modernize the academy’s operations while ensuring its spiritual integrity.
