Kumtag Desert in Shanshan County, Turpan库木塔格沙漠
    (新疆维吾尔自治区吐鲁番市)

The Kumtag Desert is located south of Shanshan County in Turpan City. Its name means “Sand Mountain” in Uyghur. It is a National 4A Tourist Attraction and is widely known as the only desert in the world that is directly connected to a city, creating the remarkable landscape of “a city beside the desert, with the desert never encroaching on the city.”

The Kumtag Desert is a branch of the Taklimakan Desert, with a rich variety of dune formations, including crescent-shaped dunes and long, undulating sand ridges. Located on the eastern edge of the Turpan Basin, it was historically an important passage along the ancient Silk Road, and remnants such as ancient beacon towers can still be found deep within the desert.

The vast desert scenery lies remarkably close to the everyday life of Shanshan County, creating a striking contrast between wilderness and urban civilization. For visitors exploring Turpan, Kumtag Desert is one of the region's key destinations for experiencing the dramatic landscapes of the desert.

    Main Highlights

Sand Mountain Viewpoint and Desert Sunrise and Sunset

Sand Mountain No. 1 Viewing Platform is one of the scenic area's main photography spots. A wooden boardwalk leads visitors to the top of the sand mountain, offering excellent views of the surrounding desert and providing an ideal location for watching sunrise and sunset.

At dusk, the setting sun turns the rolling dunes golden, while the sharp and elegant lines of the sand ridges create dramatic patterns of light and shadow. The landscape is particularly suitable for silhouette photography and wide-angle desert shots.

Sandboarding, Camel Riding, and Desert Adventure

The scenic area has dedicated sandboarding areas and camel-riding routes. Visitors can also take a desert surfing vehicle deep into the dunes, experiencing the thrill of climbing and descending steep sandy slopes.

For travelers who enjoy outdoor adventure, these activities offer a more immersive way to experience the scale and terrain of the Kumtag Desert. The desert is not simply a viewpoint destination; it also provides opportunities to experience the landscape at close range.

Desert Stargazing and Sand Sculpture Art

On clear nights, visitors interested in astronomy can enjoy views of the Milky Way over the desert. With little light pollution and an unobstructed horizon, the desert provides excellent conditions for stargazing when weather conditions are favorable.

The scenic area also features a Sand Sculpture Art Park, displaying multiple large-scale sculptures inspired by desert themes. During spring and autumn, mirages can occasionally appear over the dunes, adding an especially surreal touch to the desert landscape.

    Practical Information

Adult admission is CNY 30. Full-time students receive half-price admission, while children under 1.3 meters and seniors aged 65 and above can enter free of charge with valid identification.

The scenic area's shuttle buses are charged separately and are recommended, as they can significantly reduce the amount of walking required in the desert. Activities including desert surfing vehicles, camel riding, sandboarding, and camping are also charged separately.

During the peak season from April to October, opening hours are 08:00–21:00, with the last admission at 19:00. During the low season from November to March, opening hours are 10:00–19:00.

Visitors enter with a valid ID card. Tickets can be purchased through the online mini-program or at the on-site ticket counter. Advance reservation is recommended during public holidays.

Kumtag Desert is very close to Shanshan County. A taxi from the county center takes only around 10–20 minutes, while driving from downtown Turpan takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Allow around 3–4 hours for a standard visit. If you plan to stay for sunset or photograph the night sky, it is better to set aside half a day.

    Travel Tips

Desert surface temperatures can become extremely high in summer, so avoid visiting during the hottest part of the day whenever possible. Entering after around 16:00 is recommended, particularly if you want to experience the cooler evening temperatures and sunset scenery.

Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a sun hat, sunglasses, and sand-resistant shoe covers, as wind-blown sand can easily get into shoes and camera equipment. Drinking water inside the desert can be relatively expensive, so it is advisable to bring sufficient bottled water with you.

The temperature difference between day and night can be considerable. If you plan to stay for sunset, bring a light jacket for the cooler evening.

Walking through sand consumes considerably more energy than walking on paved surfaces. Do not venture alone into undeveloped areas of the desert, as it is easy to lose your sense of direction. After leaving the desert, clean sand from your clothing, shoes, bags, and camera equipment as soon as possible.

For a more complete Turpan itinerary, Kumtag Desert can be combined with Tuyoq Valley, Flaming Mountains, and Grape Valley to create a one- or two-day sightseeing route covering desert landscapes, Silk Road heritage, unique geological scenery, and the oasis culture of Turpan.
