Jiangjunshan Forest Park (将军山森林公园) is located on the eastern bank of the Klan River (克兰河), right next to the urban area of Altay City. Set on the southern foothills of the Altai Mountains, the park's main peak rises to more than 1,360 meters above sea level and covers an area of more than 5,000 mu (approximately 333 hectares).

After years of ecological afforestation, the slopes are now covered with spruce, pine, and dense shrubs, making this the closest mountain forest park to downtown Altay. One side of the mountain is developed as the forest park's hiking and sightseeing area, while the other is home to the well-known Jiangjunshan International Ski Resort. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons: summer brings forests, meadows, and wildflowers, while winter transforms the mountain into a snowy wonderland.

The summit offers expansive views over Altay City, the Klan River valley, and the distant snow-covered peaks of the Altai Mountains. It is an excellent elevated viewpoint for city panoramas and sunsets. Located only a few kilometers from downtown, the park is particularly convenient for a short, easy hike after arriving in Altay.

    Main Attractions and Highlights

    Forest Trails and Mountain Views

The mountain-loop wooden boardwalks and winding mountain road form the main sightseeing routes through the park. The trails have relatively gentle slopes and require little physical effort, making them suitable for visitors of different ages.

The forest is lush during the warmer months, with wildflowers covering the slopes in summer and birdsong echoing through the trees. The park functions as a natural forest retreat close to the city. Several viewing platforms are positioned along the trails, allowing visitors to stop along the way and enjoy views of the river valley and urban landscape.

    Summit Observation Tower

The summit observation tower is the main high point of the park. From its viewing platform, Altay City spreads out below, while the Klan River winds through the urban area like a ribbon.

When visibility is good, the distant snow-covered mountains of the Altai range can be seen beyond the city. Around sunset, warm golden light spreads across the entire valley and urban landscape. During the following blue hour, city lights gradually illuminate the streets below, creating a particularly atmospheric scene.

The combination of mountain, river, city, sunset, and evening lights makes this one of the favorite photography locations in Altay.

    Seasonal Scenery and Outdoor Activities

In autumn, the vegetation on the slopes turns yellow, creating rich layers of color across the forested hills. In winter, snow covers the entire mountain and blends visually with the neighboring ski resort, creating a classic snow-covered forest landscape.

The forest park is connected to Jiangjunshan International Ski Resort, and during the summer visitors can choose to take a cable car to the summit, saving the effort of hiking uphill. Outdoor activities such as paragliding and mountain biking are also available during the summer and are charged separately.

Overall, Jiangjunshan Forest Park focuses on urban mountain scenery, light hiking, outdoor leisure, and photography rather than historical monuments or cultural attractions.

    Tickets and Opening Information

Jiangjunshan Forest Park is free to enter and can be visited year-round. General visiting hours are approximately 08:30–17:00, although actual outdoor sightseeing can be adjusted according to daylight and weather conditions.

The cable car, paragliding, and other recreational activities are charged separately.

Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a complete hike and sunset viewing. Some forested areas have few or no shops, so bring sufficient drinking water.

Temperature differences between day and night can be significant in the mountains. Even in summer, bring a light jacket, particularly if you plan to stay until sunset. Mosquitoes and other insects can also be common in the forest, so insect protection is recommended.

Do not leave the main boardwalks to explore deep into the forest, and observe fire-safety regulations. During the winter snow season, paths may become icy and slippery, so wear appropriate footwear and take extra care while walking.

    How to Get There

For self-driving visitors, navigate to Jiangjunshan Forest Park (将军山森林公园). A free parking area is available at the foot of the mountain.

From central Altay, taking a taxi to the park generally takes only a few minutes to around 10–20 minutes, depending on your starting point and traffic. Public buses can also be used to reach stops near the foot of the mountain, followed by a hike along the trails.

The park can easily be incorporated into a relaxed one-day Altay City itinerary. A convenient combination is Jiangjunshan Forest Park, Hualin Park, and the Altay Museum, followed by sunset at Jiangjunshan before returning to the city center.

    Recommended Visiting Route

A practical route is to enter the forest park and follow the main mountain-loop wooden boardwalk, gradually making your way uphill toward the summit observation tower.

For the best light, arrive in the afternoon and take your time along the forest trails before reaching the summit. Stay at the observation area for sunset and the blue hour, then return to the city.

If you are short on time, you can also drive to a higher viewing area and simply enjoy the panoramic view of Altay City without completing the full hiking route.

    Best Time to Visit

The best time to arrive is generally after 16:00, when the afternoon light becomes softer and you can stay for both sunset and the blue hour.

In summer, avoid the strong midday sun and consider hiking in the late afternoon, when temperatures are more comfortable. Autumn is particularly attractive for colorful vegetation, while winter offers snow-covered forests and views toward the neighboring ski resort.

    Travel Tips

Prioritize the main mountain-loop boardwalk and walk gradually uphill toward the summit observation tower. The mountain is not particularly high and the hiking difficulty is low, making it suitable for seniors and children.

Be aware that the forest park hiking area and Jiangjunshan Ski Resort are separate areas, even though they occupy the same connected mountain. Their entrances are different, so make sure you navigate to the correct destination.

There are relatively few supply points on the mountain, so prepare drinking water and sun protection before setting out. Summer visitors should also bring insect repellent and a light jacket.

For travelers with limited time, simply reaching one of the higher observation platforms by car and enjoying the city panorama can still provide a rewarding experience. For photographers, however, staying through sunset and blue hour offers the most atmospheric views of Altay City, the Klan River valley, and the distant Altai Mountains.
