Jiadengyu Scenic Area, also known as Jiadengyu National Forest Park (贾登峪国家森林公园), is located in Burqin County, Altay Prefecture. It serves as the southern gateway to Kanas Scenic Area and is a major transportation hub for travelers heading to Kanas Lake, Hemu Village, and Baihaba Village. With an average elevation of approximately 1,600 meters, Jiadengyu combines the pristine mountain landscapes of the Altai Mountains with convenient tourist facilities.
The name “Jiadengyu” comes from Mongolian and is said to mean “Jiadeng's house.” According to local legend, a hunter named Jiadeng lived here year-round and often helped local people in need. The area lies within the mountainous region of the Altai Mountains, where vast alpine grasslands meet taiga forests and birch woodlands, creating a landscape that combines the wilderness of the northern mountains with well-developed visitor facilities.
Many travelers stay overnight in Jiadengyu to rest and prepare before taking shuttle buses into Kanas. However, Jiadengyu is also a scenic destination in its own right, offering grasslands, forests, mountain views, and pastoral landscapes. It is also the starting point of the classic Jiadengyu–Hemu hiking route, making it an important base for outdoor enthusiasts.
Main Highlights
Alpine Grasslands and Taiga Forests
The alpine grasslands are one of Jiadengyu's signature landscapes. Broad, gently rolling meadows stretch between the surrounding mountains, with wildflowers blooming across the grasslands in summer. Cattle and sheep graze freely, while snow-capped peaks rise in the distance.
The surrounding mixed forests are composed of Siberian larch, spruce, and extensive birch woodland. From mid- to late September, the forests gradually turn golden, creating spectacular autumn scenery. The combination of golden forests, open grasslands, and distant mountains makes Jiadengyu one of the classic places to experience the colors of northern Xinjiang in autumn.
Misty Mountain Boardwalks and Pastoral Life
Wooden misty mountain boardwalks wind along the hillsides and are suitable for light hiking. As you climb higher, you can look down over the Jiadengyu valley and enjoy views toward the snow-covered peaks of the Altai Mountains.
Kazakh felt yurts are scattered across the grasslands, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional pastoral life. Depending on local arrangements, travelers can sample Kazakh milk tea and hand-held meat, while gaining a closer understanding of the region's nomadic traditions and mountain lifestyle.
Jiadengyu–Hemu Ancient Hiking Trail
The Jiadengyu–Hemu hiking trail is a signature route for outdoor enthusiasts. The trail passes through river valleys, forests, and open grasslands, with constantly changing scenery along the way. The combination of mountain forests, alpine meadows, streams, and pastoral landscapes makes it one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Altai wilderness on foot.
The grassland sunset is particularly beautiful in the evening. As the sun drops toward the horizon, the mountains and forests are gradually bathed in warm golden light, creating an atmospheric landscape ideal for photography.
Jiadengyu also features a cluster of European-style town buildings, with hotels and restaurants concentrated in the area. This makes it not only a scenic stop but also a convenient accommodation base and resting point for travelers exploring Kanas.
Practical Information
Jiadengyu National Forest Park does not charge a general entrance fee. However, tickets and shuttle bus services for Kanas Scenic Area and Hemu Village must be purchased separately. The area is open throughout the day, while most sightseeing, accommodation, and visitor facilities mainly operate from May to October. Heavy winter snowfall can result in some facilities closing during the off-season.
Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a visit to Jiadengyu itself. Travelers planning to hike from Jiadengyu to Hemu should reserve a full day and prepare appropriate hiking equipment and supplies.
From central Burqin County, the drive to Jiadengyu takes approximately one hour via the Kanas tourist highway. A large paid parking lot is available in the scenic area. Shuttle buses from Burqin Passenger Transport Station also operate directly to Jiadengyu.
A practical itinerary is to travel from Burqin → Jiadengyu, then transfer to a scenic shuttle bus into Kanas. Alternatively, you can make Jiadengyu a separate stop to explore the grasslands and enjoy the sunset. Dining, accommodation, horseback riding, and hiking-related bridge or crossing fees are additional expenses.
Travel Tips
The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains can be significant. Even in midsummer, bring a windproof jacket. Mosquitoes can be numerous in the forest during summer, so insect repellent is recommended. UV radiation is also strong at higher elevations, making sunscreen, sunglasses, and other sun-protection measures advisable.
If you plan to ride a horse on the grasslands, confirm the price and duration with the local herders in advance to avoid misunderstandings.
The grassland ecosystem is fragile, so stay on appropriate paths and avoid trampling vegetation unnecessarily. Carry all rubbish with you and help protect the natural environment.
For the longer Jiadengyu–Hemu hiking route, honestly assess your physical condition before setting out. Bring sufficient food, water, and appropriate outdoor equipment, and allow enough time for the journey.
Checkpoints are located along the route, so carry your identification document with you. Drivers should reduce speed on the many winding mountain roads and give way to livestock. In autumn, fallen leaves can make forest trails wet and slippery, so take extra care with your footing when hiking.
