  • Jiadengyu National Forest Park in Burqin, Altay

    ★★★
Jiadengyu National Forest Park in Burqin, Altay贾登峪国家森林公园
    (新疆维吾尔自治区阿勒泰地区)

Jiadengyu National Forest Park (贾登峪国家森林公园), located in Burqin County (布尔津县), Altay Prefecture (阿勒泰地区), Xinjiang (新疆), is a pristine natural haven and the southern gateway to the famous Kanas Scenic Area (喀纳斯景区). Covering nearly 39,985 hectares, this park stretches across the main Altay Mountains (阿尔泰山主脉) and the Mandivansha Gangshala subrange (曼迪万沙刚沙拉支脉), with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 meters, averaging 1,600 meters. Open year-round, it is a free-entry park offering visitors a rare combination of alpine forests, grasslands, rivers, and cultural heritage.

Natural Landscape: A Three-Dimensional Painting of the Altay Mountains

    Layered Geography: Two Distinct Realms

    Above 1,500 meters (Mid-Mountain Zone):
Here, the terrain is wide and open, with dense coniferous forests of spruce (云杉) and Siberian larch (西伯利亚落叶松) interspersed with alpine meadows. Vast grasslands and rolling mountains create breathtaking vistas, perfect for photography and nature walks under blue skies and fluffy clouds.

Below 1,500 meters (Low Mountain Valleys):
The valleys feature steep cliffs, deep gorges, and rivers like the Hemu River (禾木河), forming a scenic corridor of layered landscapes. The combination of flowing water, green forests, and craggy cliffs creates picturesque scenery ideal for hiking and exploration.

    Rich Ecological Resources

    • Forests: Home to ancient spruce, larch, and birch (白桦), the park’s trees grow slowly in harsh alpine conditions. Post the National Natural Forest Protection Project, logging is strictly prohibited, implementing a “cut one, plant ten” reforestation policy.
    • Grasslands: Blooming with wildflowers like forget-me-nots and globeflowers in summer, these grasslands host over 100 seasonal Kazakh (哈萨克) yurts (毡房) from May to October.
    • Water: Snowmelt feeds the pristine Hemu and Kanas Rivers (喀纳斯河), crucial for the Irtysh River (额尔齐斯河) ecosystem.
    • Wildlife: Spot red deer, roe deer, foxes, wild rabbits, and squirrels, while golden eagles and hawks soar above the forests.

    Climate and Best Visiting Seasons

    • Summer (June–August): 15–25°C, ideal for cooling off and enjoying wildflowers. Nights can drop below 10°C, so bring a warm jacket.
    • Autumn (September–October): 5–18°C, golden birches, snow-capped mountains, and vibrant colors offer perfect photography conditions. Peak photography: September 20–October 5.
    • Winter (November–April): -20 to -5°C, offering snowy forests and alpine landscapes, suitable for skiing and snowmobiling with a professional guide.

Cultural Heritage: Kazakh Traditions and the Legend of Hunter Jiadeng

    Kazakh Nomadic Culture

During summer months, over 100 traditional Kazakh yurts (哈萨克毡房) form seasonal encampments on the grasslands. Visitors can experience horse herding, traditional wrestling, sheep-herding games, milk tea preparation, and hand-pulled lamb meals.

Etiquette: Respect local customs—do not enter yurts without permission, avoid stepping on food, and never insult livestock.

    Legend of Hunter Jiadeng

The name “Jiadengyu” (贾登峪) means “Jiadeng’s house” in Mongolian. Legend tells of Hunter Jiadeng, who secretly delivered meat to poor herders every night for fifty years. After his death, locals buried him in the mountains and built a memorial hut. The park’s name honors his generosity and the spirit of the region.
