Impression Liu Sanjie (印象・刘三姐) is the first large-scale landscape performance of Zhang Yimou’s Impression Series and one of the most famous night tourism experiences in Yangshuo, Guilin. Located at the Li River Landscape Theater in Yangshuo County, the show combines karst mountains, river scenery, folk songs, fishing culture, and ethnic traditions into a unique outdoor performance.
Unlike traditional theaters, the performance uses the Li River as a natural stage, with surrounding karst peaks as the background. The sky becomes the roof, the river becomes the stage, and bamboo rafts, fishing lights, mountains, and local performers create a changing landscape experience depending on weather, moonlight, and water conditions.
Location: Tianyuan Road, Yangshuo County, Guilin
Duration: About 70 minutes
Recommended Show Time: 19:30 evening performance
Cultural Background and Artistic Highlights
Origin and Creation
The performance is inspired by the legend of Liu Sanjie (刘三姐), the famous Zhuang ethnic singing fairy from Guangxi folk culture. The story is based on traditional Zhuang mountain songs and was widely known after the classic 1960s film Liu Sanjie.
Created by Zhang Yimou (张艺谋), Wang Chaoge (王潮歌), and Fan Yue (樊跃), the show officially opened in 2004 after years of preparation. It has become a representative project of China’s outdoor landscape performance industry and an important symbol of Yangshuo’s cultural tourism.
More than 600 performers participate in the show, including many local fishermen and ethnic villagers. Their performances combine professional stage design with authentic Li River lifestyle and Guangxi folk culture.
Unique Features of Impression Liu Sanjie
Natural Landscape Theater
The greatest feature of Impression Liu Sanjie is the integration of performance and nature. The Li River, karst peaks, moonlight, fog, fishing boats, and lights form a huge open-air theater. Every performance has different visual effects because of changing natural conditions.
Ethnic Culture Presentation
The performance combines:
- Zhuang mountain songs
- Dong ethnic singing
- Li River fishing traditions
- Bamboo raft culture
- Traditional costumes
- Folk dances and celebrations
Through music, color, and movement, it presents the relationship between Guangxi people and the landscape they live in.
Four Main Performance Chapters
Green Impression: Landscape and Rural Life
The opening chapter shows the peaceful beauty of the Li River countryside. Bamboo rafts slowly move across the river, while farming, fishing, and village life scenes appear with soft music and natural colors.
Red Impression: Mountain Songs and Romance
The most dramatic section features hundreds of performers with red silk ribbons dancing across the river. The Moon Goddess scene, embroidered balls, and Zhuang folk songs create a romantic atmosphere inspired by Liu Sanjie’s legend.
Silver Impression: Fishing Lights on the Li River
As night falls, hundreds of fishing lights appear on the river. Traditional fishing scenes with bamboo rafts and fishermen recreate the ancient lifestyle of the Li River.
Golden Impression: Celebration and Harmony
The final chapter combines ethnic dances, folk songs, and large-scale performances. It represents harvest, happiness, and harmony among Guangxi’s different ethnic groups.
