Museum Overview

Hulunbuir Ethnic Museum (呼伦贝尔民族博物馆), now part of Hulunbuir Museum (呼伦贝尔博物院), is located at Alihe Road (阿里河路), No. 24 Shengli Street (胜利大街), Hailar District (海拉尔区), Hulunbuir City (呼伦贝尔市), Inner Mongolia (内蒙古). The museum covers 19,000㎡ with exhibition space of 7,773㎡, showcasing 15,336 artifacts including 27 national first-grade relics, focusing on northern nomadic, hunting, and ethnic customs. It is a National Level II Museum, 2A scenic site, free for visitors (ID required), open Tuesday–Sunday 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays, blending traditional Han-Tibetan courtyard architecture with modern display technology, providing a comprehensive insight into prehistoric, nomadic, and contemporary ethnic life on the Mongolian Plateau.

Historical Development

The museum originated in 1998 as Hulunbuir League Ethnic Museum, renamed in 2002 as Hulunbuir Ethnic Museum, officially opened in 2009, integrated into the Hulunbuir Museum system in 2020, and fully reopened after renovation in 2024, forming one of the four main branches alongside History, Nature, and Mongolian Origins sections, making it the most complete repository of Hulunbuir ethnic civilizations.

First Floor: Prehistoric Ecology & Ancient Civilizations

This floor focuses on Ice Age ecology, Hake Culture (哈克文化), and early Xianbei (鲜卑) civilization, offering a chronological journey from prehistoric ecosystems to early human activity. Key exhibits include Mammoth and Woolly Rhinoceros fossils (猛犸象 / 披毛犀化石), Zhalainuoer human skull (扎赉诺尔人头骨), Hake Culture artifacts (石斧, 骨刀, 青铜箭镞), and early Xianbei gold and bronze ornaments including triple-deer gold plaques (三鹿纹金饰牌), illustrating the evolution of northern cultures from 7,000–5,000 years ago to Qin-Han-Xianbei periods.

Second Floor: Northern Nomadic Civilizations

The core floor highlights the cradle of northern ethnic groups: Donghu → Xiongnu → Xianbei → Khitan → Mongols, revealing migration, warfare, and cultural exchanges. Notable exhibits: Xianbei Migration Route Display with three southward paths, Gaxian Cave rubbings, Northern Wei relics; Liao and Jin Dynasty artifacts (ceramic pots, copper seals, iron tools); Mongol aristocratic relics including Yuan silver bowls, gilded saddles, ceremonial clothing; and a dedicated section on ethnic unity, showing interaction between Mongolian (蒙古族), Daur (达斡尔), Evenki (鄂温克), Oroqen (鄂伦春), and Russian (俄罗斯族) communities through artifacts and immersive scenes.

Third Floor: Ethnic Daily Life & Cultural Scenes

This floor brings northern nomadic and hunting life to life. Ethnic costumes include Mongolian gemstone-decorated robes, silver belts, and boots; Evenki reindeer-skin coats and birch bark hats; Oroqen deer-antler hats and hunting fur garments (try-on for photos). Scene reconstructions include Mongolian yurts (蒙古包), Evenki cone-shaped tents (撮罗子), Daur dwellings (达斡尔民居), and Russian wooden houses. Tools and daily life artifacts include saddles, Lelle carts (勒勒车), birch bark boats, hunting bows and arrows, milking equipment, while religious artifacts feature Tibetan Buddhist ritual tools, Shamanic costumes and drums, and Orthodox Christian icons, demonstrating both ritual and practical aspects of ethnic life.
