Huiwulin Tradition Martial Art Exhibition Hall in Pingyao, Jinzhong

Huiwulin Museum (汇武林博物馆) is located on West Street (西大街) of Pingyao Ancient City (平遥古城), Jinzhong City (晋中市), Shanxi Province (山西省). Covering an area of 2,800 square meters, it consists of a three-courtyard exhibition hall and an independent martial arts performance ground. It is the only comprehensive exhibition space dedicated to traditional martial arts culture in Pingyao Ancient City.

The museum was originally the martial arts hall of Bagua master Wang Lun (王伦) during the Qing Dynasty. Today, it systematically presents the development of Chinese martial arts through displays of ancient weapons, martial arts classics, and cultural relics. Together with Rishengchang (日升昌), the Qing-era draft bank, it forms a unique “business–martial arts” cultural landscape within the ancient city.

Historical Origin

The site was originally the martial arts hall of Bagua master Wang Lun (王伦) in the Qing Dynasty. During the Republic of China, it served as both an armed escort agency (镖局) and a martial arts teaching venue. After protective restoration in 2015, it was transformed into a specialized museum for systematically showcasing Chinese martial arts culture. The existing architectural complex preserves the spatial layout of martial arts halls from the Ming and Qing merchant era.

Architectural Features

The main buildings follow the traditional residential style of Jinzhong (晋中). The front courtyards form a three-entry siheyuan (四合院) layout, connecting the gate hall, weapons exhibition hall, and martial theory exhibition hall.

The rear courtyard houses the martial arts performance ground, paved with blue bricks and surrounded by weapon racks, recreating the traditional martial exchange setting. Carved wooden eaves retain the original Qing Dynasty plaque inscribed with “Making Friends Through Martial Arts” (以武会友).

Exhibition System

The permanent exhibition is divided into three thematic halls:

• Martial Origins Hall: Displays 32 weapons dating from the Song and Yuan to the Republic of China, including an authentic Qing Dynasty Green Dragon Crescent Blade (青龙偃月刀) and a Ming Dynasty carved edition of Wujing Zongyao (武经总要).
• Escort Agency Culture Hall: Recreates the accounting office of a late Qing escort agency, with 17 real artifacts such as escort carts, boxes, and employment contracts.
• Martial Heritage Hall: Uses multimedia and interactive installations to showcase the lineage of traditional martial arts, including Bagua Palm (八卦掌) and Xingyi Boxing (形意拳).

Social Impact

As an integral part of the Pingyao Ancient City World Cultural Heritage, the museum receives an average of 400 visitors daily (2023 data). Its regular “Martial Arts Assembly” (武林大会) performances have become a brand for intangible cultural heritage promotion in Jinzhong City.

In 2025, it was included in China Museum Chronicle: Shanxi Volume (中国博物馆志·山西卷), and related research was adapted into the documentary Martial Pulse of Pingyao (平遥武脉).

Visitor Guide

• Summer hours are extended to 19:00 (2025 update).

• The visitor center offers bilingual Chinese–English guided tours.

• Each year around Qingming Festival, the museum hosts a Traditional Martial Arts Week, where visitors can watch live demonstrations of intangible heritage practices such as Baduanjin (八段锦) and Five-Element Boxing (五行拳).
