  • Hot Air Balloon over Qinghai Lake in Gonghe County, Hainan

Hot Air Balloon over Qinghai Lake in Gonghe County, Hainan青海湖热气球体验营
    (青海省海南藏族自治州)

The hot air balloon experience camps are mainly located along the shores of Qinghai Lake (青海湖) in Gonghe County, Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, particularly around the Erlangjian (二郎剑) and Jiangxigou (江西沟) areas. They offer high-altitude sightseeing experiences and generally operate in two modes: tethered flights, which rise and descend vertically without drifting, and free flights, in which the balloon moves with the wind. From the air, visitors can look down over the deep-blue lake, grasslands, and summer rapeseed fields, making hot air ballooning one of the distinctive experiences around Qinghai Lake. The lake lies at an elevation of approximately 3,200 meters.

Best Time for a Hot Air Balloon Experience

    Seasonal Guide

The operating season generally runs from June to September, with July and August being the best months, when the surrounding grasslands and flower-covered landscapes are at their most spectacular. May and September are better for enjoying the lake scenery itself, although there are fewer flowers. From October through April of the following year, temperatures are very low and hot air balloon operations generally stop.

    Best Time of Day

Operations are strictly dependent on weather conditions. The air is generally most stable during the two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset, making early morning or late afternoon the preferred periods. Gusty winds are more common around midday, when flights are often suspended. Strong winds, rain, or heavily overcast conditions can result in flights being cancelled altogether.

    How to Get There

By car, navigate to the specific hot air balloon experience camp you have selected. It takes approximately two hours to reach the Qinghai Lake area from Xining, and the camps generally have parking areas. At the Erlangjian location, visitors must first enter the Erlangjian Scenic Area, while some camps around Jiangxigou are located outside the formal scenic area. By public transportation, take a bus from Xining to towns along the Qinghai Lake route and then take a taxi to the camp. Driving or hiring a private vehicle is recommended for greater flexibility. At the camp, visitors complete registration, weighing, and safety checks on the ground, while the entire flight operation is handled by the camp staff.

    🎈 Key Experiences

    1. Tethered Hot Air Balloon Experience

The balloon remains attached to a safety cable and rises and descends vertically, allowing passengers to enjoy a high-altitude view of Qinghai Lake, the surrounding grasslands, and rapeseed fields without drifting away from the launch site. It offers good value and excellent photography opportunities, and it is the option chosen by most visitors.

    2. Free-Flying Hot Air Balloon

The balloon is released from its tether and drifts with the wind, potentially covering several kilometers before landing. A recovery vehicle follows and picks up passengers after landing. This provides a stronger sense of adventure and costs considerably more, while also requiring much stricter weather conditions. Free flights are not available every day.

    3. Ground-Level Photography and Photo Opportunities

The experience is not limited to passengers in the air. The colorful balloons rising into the sky, particularly the moment when the burners ignite and produce powerful bursts of flame, also create excellent opportunities for ground-level photography.

Recommended time: allow approximately 1–2 hours for the entire experience, including registration, waiting, and flying. The actual flight generally lasts only around ten or more minutes, while waiting times depend on weather conditions and the queue.

    Accommodation and Food

For accommodation, visitors can stay at guesthouses around Qinghai Lake or return to Gonghe County or Xihai Town for a wider choice of hotels. Local foods include kangguo roasted lamb, yak meat, and Qinghai-style yogurt. There is very little food service at the camps, so bring sufficient drinking water.

    Travel Tips and Important Notes

    1. The camp itself is generally free to enter, while hot air balloon experiences are charged separately. Tethered and free-flight prices can differ considerably. At Erlangjian, the hot air balloon experience also requires a separate Erlangjian Scenic Area entrance ticket. Prices should be confirmed directly with the camp on the day of your visit.
    2. Qinghai Lake is at approximately 3,200 meters above sea level, so visitors should be prepared for possible mild altitude discomfort. Winds around the lake can be strong, and mornings and evenings are cold. Wear long trousers, a long-sleeved outer layer, and comfortable sports shoes. Skirts and high heels are not suitable for the experience.
    3. People with high blood pressure, heart disease, severe fear of heights, or those who are pregnant are generally advised not to participate. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a guardian.
    4. Flight altitude and whether a flight can operate depend entirely on weather conditions. Strong winds can lead to immediate cancellation. Contact the camp by phone before setting out to confirm whether flights are operating that day, rather than arriving only to find the activity cancelled.
    5. Follow all instructions from the pilot and staff throughout the experience. Take appropriate precautions during takeoff and landing, and do not touch or interfere with the equipment.
    6. Use strong sun protection, as ultraviolet radiation is intense at high altitude. Take all rubbish with you and help protect the fragile ecosystem around Qinghai Lake.
