? Ecological Value & Conservation Achievements

The Heishui River Nature Reserve sits at the junction of the Chengdu Plain and the Western Sichuan Plateau, holding great ecological significance:

    • Rich biodiversity: The reserve harbors over 1,200 species of higher plants and nearly 300 species of vertebrates. In addition to giant pandas, it is home to golden snub-nosed monkeys, snow leopards, takins, dholes, musk deer, green-tailed pheasants, and other national first-class protected species, as well as red pandas, yellow-throated martens, sambar deer, and gorals (national second-class protected species).

    • Important panda habitat: According to China’s third national panda survey, Dayi ranks among the top 10 of Sichuan’s 39 panda-distribution counties. Latest data shows 26 giant pandas in the reserve—an increase of 4 in the past decade.

    • Traces of the “king of the snow mountains”: Infrared-triggered cameras in the reserve have repeatedly captured snow leopards, providing invaluable material for scientific research and conservation.

    • Watershed conservation: Three rivers—the Heishui, Xiejiang, and Chujiang—originate here, eventually flowing into the Min River, a major upper tributary of the Yangtze. This makes the reserve crucial for soil conservation and water resources.

    ⚠️ Visitor Notes

    • Core zones off-limits: This reserve is not a traditional tourist attraction. Entry into its core areas is strictly prohibited to avoid disturbing wildlife and damaging ecosystems.

    • Peripheral access only: Limited scientific or eco-experiences may occasionally be allowed in buffer zones, but these require official permits, which ordinary tourists cannot easily obtain.

    • Best way to “visit”: For most people, the best way to experience the reserve is by following its conservation progress—through official updates, scientific reports, and camera-trap footage—rather than physical entry.

    ?️ Alternative Destinations Nearby

Since direct tourism is not permitted in the Heishui River Reserve, visitors can explore other scenic areas around Dayi County and Chengdu:

    • Xiling Snow Mountain (西岭雪山): About 50 km from Dayi town, it is Chengdu’s highest peak, famous for snow-capped mountains, forests, and sea of clouds. A well-developed tourist area.

    • Anren Ancient Town (安仁古镇): Known for its well-preserved Republican-era mansions and the Liu’s Manor Museum, ideal for cultural exploration.

    • Hongkou National Nature Reserve (都江堰虹口国家级自然保护区): Also a panda habitat; some parts allow eco-tourism (rafting, hiking) under strict management.

    • Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地): The best place to see pandas up close and learn about their conservation.

    ? Summary

The Heishui River Nature Reserve is a peaceful haven for rare wildlife—especially giant pandas and snow leopards ?️. The best way for us to “visit” is with respect and distance: by following its conservation story through official channels and supporting wildlife protection in practice.
