Heima River in Gonghe County, Hainan

Heima River (黑马河) is located in Heimahe Town, Gonghe County, Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, on the southwestern shore of Qinghai Lake. It is one of the classic stops on the Qinghai Lake circuit and is particularly famous for its Qinghai Lake sunrise. With an open lakeshore and no major mountains blocking the horizon, the area combines grasslands, blue water, colorful prayer flags, and Tibetan cultural scenery. It is also the starting point of the western route around Qinghai Lake, at an elevation of approximately 3,200 meters.

July–August: The best period overall, with lush green grasslands and comfortable weather, and the peak season for sunrise viewing. May–June brings wildflowers along the lakeshore and more waterfowl activity. September–October offers autumn scenery with fewer tourists. From November to April, temperatures are extremely low and strong winds and snow are common around the lake, so a dedicated trip during this period is not recommended.

Daily Viewing

The lakeshore along the Qinghai Lake route is generally accessible throughout the day. Sunrise is the main attraction. In summer, sunrise is approximately 05:30–06:00, so arrive at the viewing platform 40–60 minutes in advance. At night, light pollution is limited, and on clear evenings you can also enjoy the spectacular high-altitude Milky Way and starry sky.

Transportation

By car: Navigate to “Heima River Sunrise Viewing Platform.” The drive from Xining takes approximately 3 hours. Heimahe Town has parking facilities, and you can continue west along the Qinghai Lake Ring Road toward Shinaicai (石乃亥).

By public transport: Buses run from Xining to Heimahe Town, but after getting off, you still need a taxi to reach the lakeshore. Services are limited, so driving or hiring a private vehicle is recommended.

Inside the area: Sightseeing vehicles are available between the town and the lakeshore, or visitors can walk. Along the Qinghai Lake Ring Road, there are numerous opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints along the way.

This is one of the classic sunrise photography locations around Qinghai Lake. As the sun rises above the horizon, golden light spreads across the surface of the lake, sometimes accompanied by distant snow-capped mountains, creating one of the most memorable landscapes along the Qinghai Lake circuit.

2. Lake-Worship Platform and Colorful Prayer Flags

The lakeshore contains traditional Tibetan lake-worship sites, with colorful prayer flags and mani stones. The combination of the lake, grasslands, and Tibetan cultural elements provides a strong sense of the local highland landscape and traditions.

3. Scenery Along the Start of the Western Qinghai Lake Route

Heading west from Heima River, the lakeshore becomes noticeably quieter, with broad views of grasslands and open water. The route is ideal for a leisurely road trip, allowing travelers to stop frequently at scenic viewpoints.

4. Birdwatching Along the Lakeshore

Waterfowl are often active near the lake in the early morning. With some luck, visitors may also witness the seasonal migration of Qinghai naked carp (湟鱼), an important species native to Qinghai Lake.

Recommended visiting time: Allow around 2 hours for sunrise viewing; a complete lakeshore visit takes approximately 3–4 hours. Most travelers stay overnight in Heimahe.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation: Most visitors stay in guesthouses and small hotels along the streets of Heimahe Town. Rooms become difficult to find during the July–August peak season, so advance booking is strongly recommended. Lakeside Mongolian yurts may offer a more atmospheric experience, but facilities can be basic and nights can be extremely cold, so choose carefully.

Food: Local options include hand-pulled lamb, yak meat, Tibetan yogurt, and butter tea. Restaurants are readily available in the town, while supplies directly beside the lake are very limited, so bring drinking water.

Travel Tips

1. The lakeshore itself is free to visit and there is no general entrance ticket. Sightseeing vehicles are optional. Some private pasture areas operated by local herders may charge an additional fee, so always confirm the price before entering.
2. At approximately 3,200 meters above sea level, mild altitude discomfort is possible, so avoid strenuous running or exercise. Temperatures near the lake can be extremely low in the early morning; even in summer, bring a thick windproof jacket. UV radiation is also strong.
3. Sunrise and stargazing depend heavily on weather conditions. Heavy fog or overcast skies can completely obscure the sunrise.
4. Respect local Tibetan customs and do not step on mani stones or prayer flags.
5. Help protect the Qinghai Lake ecosystem and never throw rubbish into the lake.
6. The sunrise period can be crowded during peak season. Use designated parking areas and never stop on bends or other dangerous sections of the highway.
