Gande’er Mountain is located in Haibowan District, Wuhai. Its Mongolian name means “khata,” or “ceremonial silk scarf.” A monumental bronze statue of Genghis Khan stands on the summit. From the mountaintop, visitors can see the Yellow River, Wuhai Lake, the Ulan Buh Desert, and Wuhai’s urban area all at once, making Gande’er Mountain one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Address: Haibowan District, Wuhai; navigate to Gande’er Mountain Ecological Civilization Scenic Area Visitor Center (甘德尔山生态文明景区游客中心)
Basic Information
The foothill area is free and open all day, while the cable car and the interior of the Genghis Khan statue are open from 09:00–18:00, with the last uphill boarding at 17:00. Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a visit. The best travel season is May–October; spring can be very windy and dusty and is not recommended. For photography, the best time is 17:30–19:00 around sunset, when the mountain, river, desert, and city can be captured together in the strongest evening light.
Transportation
Self-driving is the preferred option. The scenic area is approximately 10 km from downtown Wuhai, taking around 20 minutes by car. A large free parking lot is available at the visitor center, and ordinary passenger cars can access it without difficulty.
For visitors taking a taxi, the fare from downtown is around RMB 20. However, ride-hailing vehicles can be difficult to find on the mountain, so it is advisable to arrange a pickup with the driver in advance or agree on a return time.
For public transportation, Bus Routes 5 and 42 reach the scenic-area entrance, although some walking is required after getting off, making this option less convenient.
Tickets and Cable Car Costs
The foothill area is free to enter and there is no general entrance ticket.
A cable car + Genghis Khan Statue Museum combination ticket costs approximately RMB 158–160. A round-trip cable car ticket costs around RMB 100, while a one-way ride is approximately RMB 80. Visitors aged 65 and above, military personnel, and people with disabilities can receive cable-car concessions with valid identification, while students are also eligible for discounts.
The mountain is steep and rugged, so hiking to the summit is not recommended; the cable car is the main way to reach the top. The cable car may temporarily stop operating in strong winds.
Main Attractions
Giant Bronze Statue of Genghis Khan — The Landmark Attraction
The statue stands 88.95 meters tall and is assembled from more than 35,000 copper panels. It dominates the main summit at an elevation of approximately 1,805 meters and creates an imposing sight from both the mountain and the city below. The interior of the statue contains a five-level museum introducing the history of the Mongol Empire, Mongolian tribal culture, and local history and heritage of Wuhai. Visitors can scan QR codes for audio explanations.
Panoramic Summit Viewpoint
Once at the summit, visitors can look down over the winding Yellow River, the blue waters of Wuhai Lake, the distant sands of the Ulan Buh Desert, and Wuhai city below. This creates a distinctive “mountain–river–lake–desert–city” panoramic composition and is one of the most unique viewpoints in Wuhai.
Foothill Meadow Boardwalk — Free
Locally known as a “Little Altay,” the gentle wooden boardwalk at the foot of the mountain passes grassland, red-rock formations, and traditional obao. It is suitable for leisurely walks and photography, and visitors who do not take the cable car can still enjoy the mountain scenery and photograph the landmark from below.
Qixia Gorge — “A Line of Sky”
On the eastern side of the foothills is a red-rock canyon known as Qixia Gorge, offering a short and relatively easy walk through the distinctive red-rock and Gobi landscape.
