  • Feilaisi in Meili Snow Mountain, Diqing

Feilaisi in Meili Snow Mountain, Diqing飞来寺
    (云南省迪庆藏族自治州德钦县)

Feilaisi is located in Deqin County (德钦县), part of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province (云南省迪庆藏族自治州). Originally named after the historic Feilaisi Monastery (飞来寺古寺), the term “Feilaisi” has gradually evolved from referring to a single religious site into a comprehensive alpine sightseeing and travel hub.

Today, Feilaisi is internationally recognized as the best panoramic viewpoint of Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山) and one of the most important transportation and accommodation centers connecting Lijiang, Shangri-La, Yubeng Village, Mingyong Glacier, and the Yunnan–Tibet Highway. For photographers, trekkers, pilgrims, and nature lovers alike, Feilaisi serves as both a destination and a strategic base.

    Geographic Location & Accessibility

    Location and Distance

Feilaisi sits directly beside National Highway G214 (214国道), also known as the Yunnan–Tibet Highway (滇藏公路). It is approximately 10 kilometers from Deqin County town, with a driving time of about 20 minutes.

Because of its roadside location, Feilaisi is easily accessible by:

    • Shared minivans

    • Private cars

    • Long-distance buses traveling between Shangri-La (香格里拉) and Tibet (西藏)

This accessibility makes it a natural overnight stop and regrouping point for travelers heading toward Meili Snow Mountain or onward to Tibet.

    Altitude & Climate

    • Average altitude: approx. 3,400 meters

    • Climate: High-altitude alpine climate with strong sunlight and large temperature differences between day and night

Travelers may experience mild altitude reaction, especially on the first day. Symptoms usually include light headache or shortness of breath. Slower pacing, proper hydration, and rest are usually sufficient for adaptation.

    Core Attractions of Feilaisi

Panoramic View of Meili Snow Mountain

Feilaisi directly faces Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山) and its Thirteen Peaks (十三峰), with the sacred main peak Kawagebo (卡瓦格博) positioned almost perfectly in the center of view.

This alignment gives Feilaisi a unique advantage:

    • No foreground obstruction

    • Low-angle, wide-open sightlines

    • Ideal lighting conditions during sunrise and sunset

As a result, Feilaisi is widely regarded as the top location to witness the “Sunshine on the Golden Mountain” phenomenon (日照金山).

    Sunrise, Sunset & Night Photography

    • Sunrise:
During sunrise, sunlight gradually illuminates the snow peaks, turning them golden. The entire process lasts about 10–20 minutes and is emotionally powerful, especially when accompanied by pilgrims chanting scriptures.

    • Sunset:
In the late afternoon, snow peaks are often framed by pink and purple clouds, creating dramatic, painterly compositions.

    • Night sky:
On clear nights with no moon, the Milky Way stretches directly above Meili Snow Mountain, making Feilaisi one of the best high-altitude astrophotography locations in Yunnan.

    Viewing Platforms & Photography Spots

    Official Viewing Platforms

The Feilaisi Viewing Platform (飞来寺观景台) is included in the Meili Snow Mountain Scenic Pass (梅里雪山通票, RMB 150). The pass also covers:

    • Jinsha River Great Bend (金沙江大湾)

    • Wunongding Viewpoint (雾浓顶)

    The main platform features:

    • White stupas

    • Prayer flags

    • Open terraces

These elements create strong foreground compositions for photography.

    Free Roadside Viewpoints

Along National Highway 214 (214国道), several roadside gaps allow free viewing of Meili Snow Mountain. These spots are suitable for:

    • Quick panoramic shots

    • Travelers without scenic passes

Caution is required due to passing vehicles.

Hotels & Cafés as Hidden Viewpoints

Many hotels and cafés in Feilaisi are designed around mountain viewing. Some terraces allow access by:

    • Purchasing food or drinks

    • Paying a small entrance fee (around RMB 10)

These locations are ideal for relaxed, crowd-free viewing, especially during sunrise.

    Feilaisi Monastery & Cultural Significance

    Feilaisi Monastery

The historic Feilaisi Monastery (飞来寺古寺) dates back more than 380 years to the Ming Dynasty. Though modest in size, it plays an important cultural and spiritual role.

    • Opening hours: 08:00–17:00

    • Incense fee: RMB 10

    Key features include:

    • A memorial to the 1991 Sino-Japanese Meili Snow Mountain mountaineering tragedy (1991年中日联合登山队遇难事件)

    • A stupa commemorating the visit of the 10th Panchen Lama (十世班禅)

The monastery reflects the deep spiritual reverence local Tibetans hold for Meili Snow Mountain, which is considered a sacred, unclimbable peak.
