Why is Dazhao Temple So Special?

Dazhao Temple (大召寺) is the oldest building and the largest temple in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. The temple is the first Lamaism Temple in Hohhot. And originally set the silver Buddha figure of Sakyamuni, the lamasery was called silver Buddha figure temple in the ancient time. Dazhao Temple is not only a Buddha holy land, but also a well-known place of interest. Glorious architectures, rare cultural relics and artwork as well as mysterious Qiamu dance and Buddha music are unique feature of Dazhao Temple culture.

The Silver Buddha Statue

The silver Buddha figure refers to the state of Sakyamuni which is set in the main hall. This state has a history more than 400 years, as one of the biggest silver Buddha figure n China. With a height of 3 meters, the figure is in a sitting posture. According to historical records, Dalai Lama III held Buddhist conference for celebrating the establishment of the silver statue of Buddha, which was a very grand event in the history of Tibetan- Buddhism.

Fresco

The fresco, which are full of scripture hall and four walls of Buddha Hall, are said to be made of mineral materials, and the color is still the same with hundreds years ago. The content of the fresco is based on the stories in Buddhist scriptures, depicting various scenes of heaven, earth and hell. The images of Buddha and figures in the painting are vivid and lifelike. Every year on the 15th day of the first month and the 15th day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar, monks will carry out and hang a huge fresco in front of the Buddha Hall. When drying the fresco, a Dharma meeting will be held in front of the Buddha statue. All monks chant sutras and pray and play Dharma music.

Dragon Statue

Dragon status refer to the two golden dragons which are set on both sides of the silver Buddha figure. These two dragons are carved on the mail pillars of the hall. The lively figure and the splendid atmosphere are symbols of the elaborate skill of artists.
