Dadonggou Scenic Area is located in Fuyun County, Altay Prefecture, and is part of a regional-level forest park in Xinjiang. Situated in the upper valley of the Irtysh River (额尔齐斯河), it is approximately 60 kilometers from Fuyun County and 18 kilometers east of Koktokay Town. In fact, Dadonggou forms the main canyon section of the Koktokay Irtysh Grand Canyon (可可托海额尔齐斯大峡谷).

The canyon has a U-shaped profile and stretches for approximately 8 kilometers, with the Irtysh River rushing through its center. Towering granite peaks, primeval taiga forests, and birch woodlands line both sides of the valley, while glacial meltwater has shaped a rugged landscape of deep gorges, waterfalls, river flats, and enormous boulders.

Dadonggou has avoided excessive commercial development and retains the pristine, wild character of the forests and river valleys deep in the Altai Mountains. Most travelers visit it as part of a combined itinerary with Koktokay, making it an important destination for nature sightseeing in northern Xinjiang.

    Main Attractions and Highlights

Towering granite mountains rise on both sides of the canyon. Shenzhong Mountain (神钟山) is the area's signature granite peak, with its massive rock formation resembling a giant inverted bell. Its cliffs are covered with vertical grooves and honeycomb-like hollows formed by millions of years of weathering, creating an exceptionally dramatic appearance.

Other distinctive granite peaks are arranged throughout the area, including Camel Peak (骆驼峰), Feilai Peak (飞来峰), and Shenxiang Peak (神象峰). Their unusual shapes create a constantly changing mountain panorama. The rock surfaces are covered in patches of weathered moss, while gray granite cliffs contrast vividly with fresh green moss, producing a distinctive natural color palette.

The Irtysh River surges through the canyon with clear, emerald-green water. Huge granite gravel and boulders cover the riverbanks, while spruce, larch, and birch forests grow continuously along both sides of the valley. In summer, the forests are lush and intensely green. From late September to October, the birch leaves turn golden, creating richer layers of color across the mountain landscape.

    Waterfalls and River Valley Scenery

More than 20 waterfalls are scattered throughout the canyon. Among the best known are Songlinwan Waterfall (松林湾瀑布), Gaofeng Waterfall (高峰瀑布), and the Large and Small Dishui Waterfalls (大小滴水瀑布). Water cascades down rocky cliffs into clear pools hidden among the forests, adding a lively element to the rugged alpine scenery.

Walking slowly along the river valley trails allows visitors to experience the combination of high mountain cliffs, rushing water, and dense forest at close range. From some of the wider river flats, you can also look toward the distant snow-capped peaks of the Altai Mountains.

The scenic area retains some of its original pastoral trails, and visitors may occasionally encounter local herders moving livestock or grazing their animals, offering a glimpse into the traditional pastoral lifestyle of the Altai Mountains.

Overall, Dadonggou focuses on wilderness sightseeing, river-valley hiking, and landscape photography, rather than artificial amusement facilities.

    Tickets and Opening Information

Dadonggou is a core section of the Koktokay Irtysh Grand Canyon and follows the unified entrance-ticket system of Koktokay Scenic Area. The scenic-area shuttle bus is a mandatory additional purchase for entering and exploring the canyon.

Students and visitors aged 60–64 receive half-price admission. Visitors aged 65 and above and children under 1.3 meters are exempt from the main entrance ticket.

Summer opening hours are generally 09:00–19:30. Winter operating hours are shorter, and admission stops one hour before closing. Because the canyon is located in a mountainous area, heavy rain and snowfall can affect access. Temporary restrictions may be introduced during severe storms to reduce the risk of flash floods in the river valley.

Allow approximately 3–4 hours for a complete visit to the main canyon section. Travelers planning longer hikes along secondary valley trails should allow additional time.

The river valley contains gravel and uneven rocky surfaces, so do not climb over safety barriers or approach fast-flowing sections of the river. Temperatures can vary greatly between day and night, so bring a warm jacket. Mosquitoes and other insects are common in forested areas, so use appropriate protection. Do not leave the main trails or enter remote side valleys alone, as it is easy to become lost.

    How to Get There

Self-driving or a private/chartered vehicle is the preferred way to reach Dadonggou. From Koktokay Town, drive east to enter the Dadonggou canyon area. A large parking area is available near the scenic area.

From Fuyun County, the journey is approximately 60 kilometers and takes around 1 hour by car. Supply points along the route are limited, so it is advisable to refuel before departure and prepare food and drinking water in advance.

There is no direct public transportation to Dadonggou. Most visitors incorporate it into a full-day Koktokay itinerary and return to Koktokay Town or Fuyun County after sightseeing.

Private vehicles cannot drive directly into the deeper sections of the canyon. Visitors must use the scenic-area shuttle bus to reach the main viewpoints and sightseeing areas.

    Recommended Visiting Route

A practical route is to take the shuttle bus deep into the canyon first and then explore the main attractions from the inner section outward. Recommended highlights include Shenzhong Mountain, the waterfalls, distinctive granite peaks, and the main viewing platforms.

Travelers with sufficient stamina can add a short hike along the river valley trails for a more immersive experience of the mountain-and-river landscape. Those with limited time or mobility can simply use the shuttle bus and get off at the main viewpoints.

Because Dadonggou is essentially the main canyon of the Koktokay Irtysh Grand Canyon, it should not be treated as a completely separate attraction when planning your itinerary. Avoid scheduling both Dadonggou and the Irtysh Grand Canyon as separate full attractions, as this would result in unnecessary duplication.

Best Time to Visit and Photograph

The best sightseeing periods are generally morning and the hours around sunset, when softer light enhances the textures of the granite cliffs and brings out the colors of the forests and river valley.

September to October is the best season for overall scenery. The birch forests turn golden, creating especially photogenic autumn landscapes and rich contrasts between the colorful trees, granite mountains, and green river.

Summer offers a different experience. The Irtysh River is fuller and more turbulent, making it an excellent time to observe the powerful flow of the river through the canyon, while the surrounding vegetation is predominantly green.

    Travel Tips

The number of shops inside the scenic area is limited, so bring sufficient drinking water, sun protection, and windproof clothing before entering the canyon. Mountain weather can change quickly, and even during the warmer months, a jacket is recommended.

For photography, early morning and late afternoon provide better light than midday. Autumn visitors should allow extra time for photography, as the golden birch forests are among the area's most attractive seasonal features.

If you are traveling through Koktokay, it is best to regard Dadonggou as part of the Koktokay Irtysh Grand Canyon experience, rather than planning a separate visit. A well-organized itinerary can combine the main canyon viewpoints, waterfalls, granite peaks, and short river-valley hikes in a single visit without repeating the same section of the journey.
