Cloud Rock Leaning Pagoda (Yunyan Ta) in Suzhou

The Yunyan Temple Pagoda (云岩寺塔), better known as Tiger Hill Pagoda (虎丘塔), rises prominently from the summit of Tiger Hill and has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Suzhou’s ancient city. There is a local saying that “see Tiger Hill Pagoda first, and then you have truly seen Suzhou.”

The pagoda was first built during the Five Dynasties and completed during the Northern Song Dynasty, more than 200 years before the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is one of China’s best-known ancient leaning pagodas and the defining landmark of the historic Tiger Hill site, which forms part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou UNESCO World Heritage property.

Built entirely of green bricks, the pagoda has survived wars, earthquakes, and centuries of uneven ground settlement. Its tower now leans noticeably to one side, yet has remained standing for more than a thousand years. The Highlights of Yunyan Temple Pagoda

The pagoda is an eight-sided, seven-story brick tower standing 48.2 meters high and weighing more than 6,000 tons. Its unusual double-shell brick structure was constructed without relying on wooden beams for structural support, making it an important surviving example of Northern Song brick-tower architecture in the Jiangnan region.

Uneven settlement of the hillside foundation caused the tower to gradually shift toward the northwest, with the maximum horizontal displacement reaching approximately 2.34 meters. After several rounds of reinforcement and restoration, the inclination has now been stabilized, allowing the pagoda to remain safely standing in its distinctive leaning position.

The combination of a thousand-year history and a visible architectural lean makes the tower one of the most fascinating ancient structures in Suzhou. Look closely at the different levels and you can still see brick-carved brackets, decorative openings, and traditional architectural details preserved in the weathered masonry.

Historic Remains around the Pagoda

The pagoda stands within an atmospheric historic courtyard where visitors can see traditional brick inscriptions, including the old inscription “Haiyong Lanf u” (海涌岚浮). Towering ancient trees and quiet surroundings create a striking contrast with the massive brick structure.

During restoration work in 1956, a large collection of precious artifacts was discovered within the pagoda, including Buddhist scriptures, gold and silver objects, and Buddhist statues. Many of these treasures are now preserved at Suzhou Museum, providing valuable evidence of the flourishing Buddhist culture of ancient Jiangnan.

Pagoda Shadow Bridge (塔影桥) is the classic viewpoint. On a calm morning, the surface of the water can create a nearly complete reflection of the ancient pagoda, producing one of the most beautiful compositions in the Tiger Hill scenic area.

The Wanjing Mountain Villa (万景山庄) offers another interesting perspective. Framing the pagoda through its traditional doorway creates a classic Chinese architectural composition.

Around Thousand People Rock (千人石), the pagoda rises behind lush greenery, creating a more natural and atmospheric setting that is particularly suitable for traditional-style photography.

Experience the Interior of the Pagoda

The upper levels of Yunyan Temple Pagoda are not open to visitors, but the first-floor underground area can be visited by advance reservation.

Visitors who successfully make a reservation can take a closer look at the unusual double-shell structure from inside. Spaces are limited, so advance booking is essential. Photography and video recording are not permitted inside.

The upper part of the tower cannot be climbed, so visitors can only appreciate the pagoda from the surrounding viewing areas and the permitted interior section.

Best Time to Visit Yunyan Temple Pagoda

Yunyan Temple Pagoda is located within Tiger Hill Scenic Area, which can be visited throughout the year. However, March to May and September to November are generally the most pleasant seasons.

In spring, the pagoda is surrounded by fresh greenery and flowering plants, while autumn brings golden foliage that contrasts beautifully with the weathered green bricks.

For photography, 7:30–9:00 AM is particularly recommended. The morning light is soft, visitor numbers are relatively low, and calm water around Pagoda Shadow Bridge offers a better chance of capturing a clear reflection.

After 3:00 PM, the afternoon sun creates stronger shadows and highlights across the weathered brick surface, emphasizing the pagoda’s texture and architectural details.

Allow around 2.5–3 hours to explore Tiger Hill, including Yunyan Temple Pagoda. Weekends and public holidays can be crowded, so visiting on a weekday or arriving early is recommended.

How to Get to Yunyan Temple Pagoda

Yunyan Temple Pagoda is located inside Tiger Hill Scenic Area in Suzhou’s Gusu District. Visitors must first enter Tiger Hill before walking up to the pagoda. Because roads around the historic city can become congested, public transportation is generally recommended.

By Metro: Take Suzhou Metro Line 6 to Tiger Hill Station (虎丘站) and leave from Exit 3. The south entrance of Tiger Hill is about a 5-minute walk away. Once inside, follow the main route uphill, passing Thousand People Rock and Sword Pond before reaching Yunyan Temple Pagoda.

By Bus: Tourist Bus Lines 1 and 2 run to the Tiger Hill terminus, from where you can walk directly into the scenic area.

By High-Speed Train: Travelers arriving in Suzhou by high-speed rail can get off at Suzhou Railway Station and take a taxi to Tiger Hill, usually taking around 10–20 minutes depending on traffic.

By Car: Parking is available near the south entrance of Tiger Hill, although spaces can become limited during weekends and public holidays.

Travel Tips for Visiting Yunyan Temple Pagoda

Yunyan Temple Pagoda is part of Tiger Hill Scenic Area and does not require a separate admission ticket. A regular Tiger Hill ticket includes access to the pagoda and its surrounding area.

If you want to visit the first-floor interior, make sure to reserve in advance through the official “Suzhou Gardens Tourism” WeChat account. Daily places are limited, and on-site reservations are not accepted.

Tiger Hill contains numerous stone steps and uneven surfaces that can become slippery in wet weather, so comfortable shoes with good traction are recommended.
