Changping Ancient Great Wall of Yan Ruins in Beijing

The Changping Ancient Great Wall of Yan Ruins (昌平燕古长城遗址) is located 20 kilometers southwest of Beijing's Changping Satellite City, atop the western hills, and stretches 30 kilometers from north to south. Constructed during the late Warring States period (circa 283 BC), this ancient section of the Great Wall was built by the Yan Kingdom for defense against northern invaders. After the unification of China by the Qin Dynasty, this section of the Wall fell into disrepair and was largely destroyed by natural forces. Despite its ruins, the site remains an important historical landmark and was designated a Beijing Cultural Heritage Site in 1984. The site is open year-round and is easily accessible via nearby roads with dining and accommodation facilities.

History and Significance

The northern section of this Great Wall was constructed during the reign of King Zhao of Yan in 283 BC, primarily as a defense mechanism for the Yan Kingdom’s northern border. Following the Qin Dynasty’s unification, the wall fell into neglect and crumbled over time. Today, the wall remains in a state of ruin, with the remaining structure standing only about 1.5 meters tall and 2 meters wide. Some sections, including the watchtowers and beacon towers, have collapsed into piles of rubble. Despite its state of disrepair, the site still offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient military architecture and the history of the Warring States period.

In 1984, the Yan Ancient Great Wall Ruins was listed as a protected cultural heritage site by the city of Beijing. A section of the Wall, including the Huang Lou Yuan (黄楼院), was reinforced during the Ming Dynasty, giving the structure a unique blend of Warring States and Ming characteristics.

1. Huang Lou Yuan Great Wall – The Core Section

Located at the junction of Changping and Hebei Huailai, this 8-kilometer section of the Great Wall is the highest in Beijing, with an elevation of 1439.3 meters at the Huang Lou watchtower. It offers panoramic views of the Guanting Reservoir and the surrounding mountains. The Huang Lou tower is the tallest beacon tower in Beijing, and from its summit, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the mountains and lakes below.

One of the most unique features of this section is the circular enemy tower (圆楼), the only one of its kind in Beijing. This round structure stands in contrast to the more common square enemy towers seen along the Ming Dynasty sections of the Wall.

2. Changyu Cheng Ancient Village & Border Culture

Changyu Cheng, established during the Ming Dynasty, was one of the three critical military strongholds along the northern border of Beijing, alongside Zhenbiancheng and Baiyangcheng. The village retains many historic stone-built homes from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and is a center for Shanbangzi opera, a folk art that has been passed down for over 600 years. The village continues to stage performances of Shanbangzi on the evenings of the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, preserving a rich local atmosphere.

The Yan Great Wall runs along the ridgelines of the mountains, offering both stunning natural scenery and historical allure. The spring and summer months see lush greenery, while in autumn and winter, the scene transforms into a more barren but majestic landscape, with the wall's remnants standing tall amidst dry grass and distant peaks. Opening Hours: Open year-round, 24 hours a day. Admission is free, and there are no parking or entry fees.

Best Time to Visit: The best seasons for visiting are April to May (when the mountain flowers bloom) and September to October (when the weather is cool and the leaves turn red). The summer provides a cool escape, while winter offers spectacular snow-covered landscapes.

By Car (Recommended):

• Navigation: Directly search for "Changping Changyu Cheng Village" in your GPS.
• Route: From Beijing city center → Jingzang Expressway → Nanyan Road → Liucun Town → Changyu Cheng Village. There is a free parking lot at the village entrance. However, cars cannot go up the mountain.

By Public Transport:

• Take Changping Line of the subway to Changping Station, then transfer to Bus 33 to the "Changyu Cheng" stop. From there, it is about a 20-minute walk to the entrance of the scenic area.

• Time: About 1 hour to the marker, and 2 hours for the round-trip, leisurely pace.

• Route: Changyu Cheng Village → Reservoir Walkway → Boundary Marker → Huang Lou Yuan Beacon Tower (High Tower) → Ruins of the Wall → Return the Same Way
• Highlights: Climb to the highest beacon tower in Beijing, enjoy sweeping views of the mountains and Guanting Reservoir, and experience the ancient ruins of the Wall up close.
• Time: 2 hours one-way, 4 hours round-trip, with time for photos and rest.

• Highlights: This challenging trek follows the ridgeline of the Wall, traversing wild mountain forests and exploring parts of the Wall that have not been restored. It's an adventurous experience, with minimal human presence.
• Tip: Professional outdoor gear and a guide are recommended for this route. Plan your route carefully to avoid getting lost.

Important Notes

Wear non-slip hiking shoes as many of the mountain trails are made of stone or wooden planks, with some steep sections without steps.

The area has no stores or supply points, so bring enough water (1-2L per person), snacks, and energy bars. Summer visitors should also carry sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and winter visitors should prepare warm clothing and windproof gear.

The Yan Great Wall is a protected cultural site, so climbing the ruins, carving inscriptions, or taking bricks is prohibited. Please respect the heritage and practice responsible tourism.

Winds at the summit can reach up to level 10, so avoid lingering near cliffs and stay safe. It's also a good idea to download offline maps as phone signals may be weak in some areas.
