Bosten Lake is located in Bohu County, Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Known as the “Western Sea” (西海) in ancient times, it is a National 5A Tourist Attraction and China’s largest inland freshwater flow-through lake. The lake covers more than 1,600 square kilometers and lies at an elevation of about 1,048 meters. The Kaidu River is its main water source, while the lake also serves as the source of the Kongque River, through which its waters continue to flow outward.

The lake’s vast open waters contrast dramatically with the wetlands and reed beds of the smaller lake area. On one side are expansive blue waters, while on the other are golden desert landscapes, creating a rare natural combination of lake, desert, and reeds. Bosten Lake is about 57 km from downtown Korla and is a popular lake and wetland destination on southern Xinjiang self-driving routes. It is often combined with the Qigexing Buddhist Temple Ruins (七个星佛寺遗址) to create a one-day itinerary that brings together Silk Road history and lakeside scenery.

    Main Attractions and Highlights

Dahekou and the West Sea Fishing Village

Dahekou, also known as West Sea Fishing Village (西海渔村), is the best-equipped and most developed main sightseeing area of Bosten Lake. The enormous “First Pot of West Sea” (西海第一锅) sculpture is one of its most recognizable landmarks and a popular photo spot. A wooden lakeside boardwalk stretches along the shore, while the Wanghai Pavilion offers expansive views across the lake.

The area also features a sandy beach, a Mongolian camp, and a variety of water activities, including speedboats and sightseeing cruises. Visitors can try a traditional Bosten Lake freshwater fish feast, while the annual winter fishing festival offers a chance to experience local fishing traditions during the colder months.

Lianhai World and the Lotus Wetlands

Lianhai World (莲海世界), also known as Ahongkou (阿洪口), is home to one of the largest natural colonies of wild water lilies in China. From June to August, extensive stretches of pink and white water lilies spread across the water, creating an especially picturesque landscape.

Traditional pleasure boats travel through a maze of reeds, while morning mist often hangs over the lake, giving the wetlands a quiet and atmospheric character. Early morning is the best time to experience the area’s peaceful scenery and observe waterbirds.

    Bailuzhou and the Lake–Desert Landscape

Bailuzhou (白鹭洲) is one of the best places to photograph the unusual combination of lake and desert. One side opens onto deep blue lake waters, while the other connects directly with long stretches of golden sand dunes. Visitors can climb the dunes for elevated views of the lake or try activities such as sand sliding and camel riding.

Around sunset, the dunes and lake develop striking layers of light and shadow, making Bailuzhou an excellent photography location. The surrounding reed wetlands are also an important habitat for numerous waterbirds. During migration seasons, visitors may see groups of egrets, wild ducks, gulls, and other waterfowl. Unlike many high-altitude destinations in Xinjiang, Bosten Lake is not located in a high mountain environment, so visitors do not need to worry about altitude sickness.

    Jinshatan Beach

The Jinshatan Beach (金沙滩) area features a relatively gentle lakeshore and is often described as “Xinjiang’s Little Sanya.” It is particularly suitable for relaxed lakeside recreation, playing by the water, and enjoying the open scenery.

    Tickets and Opening Information

The different sightseeing areas of Bosten Lake operate with separate entrance tickets. Dahekou, Lianhai World, and Bailuzhou each charge their own admission fees, while combination tickets may also be available. Students and visitors aged 60–64 generally receive half-price admission, while seniors aged 65 and above and children under 1.3 meters can enter the main scenic areas free of charge with valid identification.

Sightseeing cruises, speedboats, and beach recreation activities require additional payment. During the peak season from May to October, the scenic areas generally operate from 09:00 to 20:30, with last admission at 20:00. In winter, the range of areas open to visitors is reduced, and temporary closures may occur during periods of strong wind.

Allow about 2–3 hours for Dahekou alone. If you plan to visit Lianhai World and Bailuzhou as well, allow at least 4 hours.

UV radiation around the lake can be strong, so sun protection is essential. Day–night temperature differences can also be significant, so bring a light jacket. Wetland ecosystems are fragile; stay on designated wooden boardwalks and do not disturb waterbirds. Because the lake is extensive and water-based activities involve open water, always follow the safety instructions for boats and other recreational activities.

    How to Get There

Self-driving or hiring a private vehicle is the most convenient way to explore Bosten Lake. From Korla, follow G218 National Highway for about one hour to reach the Dahekou Scenic Area, which has a large parking lot.

Buses operate from the Korla Passenger Transport Station to Bohu County. From the county town, visitors can continue to the scenic area by taxi, although this option is less flexible and makes it more difficult to visit several separate areas of the lake in one day.

A recommended itinerary is Qigexing Buddhist Temple Ruins → Bosten Lake Dahekou. If you have more time, continue to Lianhai World afterward. For long-distance self-driving trips, fill up with fuel before setting out.

    Best Time to Visit

June to August is ideal for seeing the water lilies at Lianhai World and escaping the intense summer heat of inland Xinjiang. From September to October, the reeds turn golden and the lake becomes particularly clear, making this period excellent for lakeside photography and sunset views.

Early morning is the best time to visit Lianhai World for water lilies and waterbirds. From the afternoon through sunset, Dahekou and Bailuzhou offer the best conditions for photographing the lake and desert in warm evening light.

    Travel Tips

The different scenic areas are relatively far apart, so allow sufficient driving time when planning your itinerary. Local restaurants mainly specialize in freshwater fish feasts from Bosten Lake, but prices can be relatively high, so carrying your own drinking water is recommended.

If you have limited time, prioritize Dahekou. It has the most complete facilities and allows visitors to experience Bosten Lake’s open waters, reed wetlands, local customs, and recreational activities in a single stop.
