    Shandan Giant Buddha Temple Overview

Shandan Giant Buddha Temple (山丹大佛寺) is located at the foot of Liaogao Mountain (瞭高山) in Qingquan Town, Shandan County, Zhangye City, Gansu Province. It is a national 4A-level scenic area, formerly known as Tufosi Temple (土佛寺), and was first built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, with a history of more than 1,500 years. Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty granted the temple the imperial plaque “Tufu” (土佛). The temple is famous for housing one of Asia’s largest indoor gilded clay seated statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, making it an important Buddhist cultural site along the ancient Silk Road corridor.

The entrance ticket is approximately RMB 40; students and seniors can enjoy half-price tickets, while eligible visitors can enter free of charge with valid identification. During the peak season from May to October, the opening hours are 08:30–18:00, with admission stopping at 17:30. During the off-season from November to April, the opening hours are 08:30–17:30.

Best Time to Visit Shandan Giant Buddha Temple

    Seasonal Recommendations

April to June: The Hexi Corridor climate is mild and comfortable, making it ideal for temple visits and cultural sightseeing. The traditional temple fair held on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month creates a strong local folk atmosphere.

July to August: Summer is suitable for escaping the heat, with many sunny days. On clear days, visitors can enjoy distant views of the Qilian Mountains (祁连山) snow peaks.

September to November: The autumn weather is cool and dry, with excellent visibility and clear skies, making it a comfortable season for sightseeing and photography.

December to March: Visitor numbers are lower, creating a peaceful and solemn winter atmosphere in Northwest China. However, the temperature difference between day and night is extremely large, so warm clothing is necessary.

    Best Visiting Time

The morning from 09:00 to 11:00 offers suitable natural light for appreciating the temple architecture and taking photos. A complete visit usually takes around 2–2.5 hours.

    Transportation Guide

Self-driving: Navigate to Shandan Giant Buddha Temple (山丹大佛寺). The temple is located about 5 kilometers west of Shandan County town and can be reached via the Lianhuo Expressway (连霍高速). Free parking is available at the scenic area.

Public transportation: Visitors can get off at Shandan Railway Station (山丹站) and take a taxi for about 10 minutes. There are limited rural and county bus services from the town, but departures are infrequent. Taking a taxi is recommended, and keeping the driver’s contact information is useful for arranging the return trip.

Recommended travel combination: Shandan Giant Buddha Temple can be combined with Shandan Horse Ranch (山丹军马场), Han-Ming Great Wall ruins (汉明长城遗址), and Yanzhi Mountain (焉支山) to create a Silk Road cultural route through the Hexi Corridor.

    🏯 Core Attractions

Daxiong Hall (Great Buddha Hall) (大雄宝殿/大佛楼)

The seven-story wooden structure hall with multi-level eaves is the landmark building of Shandan Giant Buddha Temple. Inside the hall stands the 35-meter-high gilded clay seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, the core attraction of the temple. The Buddha’s face, hands, and feet are covered with gold leaf, and visitors can walk around the statue for worship and appreciation. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the hall.

Seven-Arch Stone Memorial Gate and Buddhist Kingdom Square (七孔石牌坊、佛国广场)

The large stone memorial gate is an impressive architectural feature of the temple. From the Buddhist Kingdom Square, visitors can capture panoramic views combining the temple buildings with the distant Qilian Mountains, making it one of the best photography locations in the scenic area.

Five Hundred Arhats Hall and Ksitigarbha Hall (五百罗汉堂、地藏殿)

These halls display groups of Buddhist statues with different facial expressions and artistic styles. The vivid Arhat figures and traditional Han Buddhist temple layouts provide visitors with an insight into Chinese Buddhist sculpture and religious culture.

Buddhist Culture Corridor and Nine Dragons Bathing Prince Landscape (佛文化长廊、九龙沐太子景观)

The cultural corridor uses murals and stone carvings to present stories from the life of Buddha. The garden-style Zen pathways create a peaceful environment combining religious culture, art, and landscape design.

    Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda (万佛塔)

Climbing the pagoda provides a panoramic view of Liaogao Mountain, Qidian Reservoir (祁店水库), Shandan County town, and the surrounding Hexi Corridor landscape. The wide views of desert scenery, farmland, and mountain landscapes showcase the unique beauty of Northwest China.

    Accommodation and Local Food

Most visitors choose to stay in Shandan County town or Zhangye City. Local Northwest specialties include hand-grabbed lamb, lamb noodle soup, and fried pao zhang (a traditional noodle dish). Dining options around the temple are limited, so carrying drinking water is recommended.
